The Tamil Nadu Cabinet met for the first time on Wednesday Oct 19,2016 after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was hospitalised here for fever and dehydration on September 22,2016
Finance Minister O Pannerselvam, who has been alloted all eight portfolios hitherto held by Jayalalithaa, chaired the meeting with her photo on the table and also left the chief minister’s regular seat empty in the Cabinet hall.
The meeting also came against the backdrop of Opposition parties, including the DMK, demanding an all-party meeting and a special Assembly session for passing a resolution to prevail upon the Centre to constitute the Cauvery Management Board immediately.
Issues like the Madras High Court’s refusal to lift the stay on civic polls and appointing officers to local bodies, as the term of councillors and mayors expires by October, were also discussed in the meeting.
The meeting assumes significance as Tamil Nadu expressed its discontent over the recommendation of the Cauvery Technical Team in the Supreme Court of India(SCI) on Tuesday Oct 18,2016
