Bill to penalise discrimination against traditional clothes introduced in TN Assembly

The Tamil Nadu Assembly has taken up a proposed law penalising establishments for discriminating against traditional clothes. The Bill says that any establishment which restricts use of traditional clothes would stand to lose its licence.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has introduced a bill in the State Assembly on Wednesday Aug 06,2014, seeking to remove restrictions imposed by recreation clubs, hotels, theatres, malls, halls, auditoriums and stadiums on men wearing dhoti.

It also proposes 1-year imprisonment and fine of Rs 25,000 for those who violate the law by not allowing persons clad in dhoti from entering private clubs.

The introduction of the Bill follows the denial of entry by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association club to a Madras High Court Judge and two senior advocates as they were wearing dhotis.
