Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa constitutes SIT to probe Chennai building collapse Sunday July 06,2014

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday July 06,2014 announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to go into the collapse of an eleven-storeyed private building in Moulivakkam near Porur, on the outskirts of Chennai. 

Headed by a joint commissioner of police, the team will have experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras, Anna University and other universities, besides those in the State Public Works Department (PWD), the Chief Minister said. 

The experts would render technical advice to the police officials and guide them. The team would function within the overall supervision of Chennai Police Commissioner. 

The building collapse, which took place on Saturday June 28,2014 resulted in the death of 61 persons.


Twenty seven persons were rescued and admitted to hospitals. The six-day-long rescue operations ended on Friday July 4,2014

A case had been booked under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code at the Mangadu police station and senior executives of the firm that had taken up the construction of the building were among those arrested

A few days ago, the TN government also announced the constitution of a one-man commission of inquiry to probe the building collapse with former High Court Judge Justice R. Reghupathy as the head.
