Day Two Friday July 18,2014

  • England is 219 for 6 at stumps after day two of the second Test at Lord's
  • The hosts trail India by 76 after bowled out for 295 earlier in the day
  • England's Gary Ballance scored 110 before falling late in the day
  • Moeen Ali was England's only other significant contributor with 32
  • Alastair Cook's poor run of form continued as he fell cheaply again for 1

  • Alastair Cook’s swish of his bat, after he was trapped on his crease and offered MS Dhoni a catch with just 10 to his name, betrayed the  feelings of a man who has now gone 26 innings without adding the 26th hundred of his Test career.

Alastair Cook has made 107 runs in 8 innings this year, and his run without a hundred extends to 26 over 14 months, after he fell for 10 here - following movement across him and edging Bhuvneshwar Kumar behind to a diving Mahandra Singh Dhoni.

    Alastair Cook's last Test century came against New Zealand at Headingley in May 2013 when he scored 130. Since that innings he has scored:  13, 50, 12, 8, 62, 0, 51, 22, 25, 34, 13, 65, 3, 1, 72, 0, 27, 51, 7, 7, 17, 28, 17, 16, 5, and now 10

Alastair Cook and Sam Robson are yet to register a half-century opening stand, in six attempts together.
By lunch, both openers - Alastair Cook and Sam Robson were gone on the way to 51 for two in reply to 295, after England had needed only 10 balls to take India’s last wicket as Mohammed Shami nicked Ben Stokes to Alastair at 1st slip to take the catch at the 2nd attempt Shami nicked Ben Stokes to first slip, where Cook clung on to a juggling catch at the second attempt

Gary Ballance scored 110 in a partnership of 98 with Moeen Ali (32) to revive England from 113-4 following a top-order slump

Gary Ballance is only the third England player to score hundreds in his first two Lord's Tests, after Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott
Gary Ballance struck a brilliant maiden Test century(104*) in only his second Test and guide England to 267-8 in their second innings against Sri Lanka at Lord's in the First Test on Day 4

Gary Ballance put on 78 for the seventh wicket with Chris Jordan (35), a rapid 57 off 44 balls with Stuart Broad, and finished unbeaten on 104.
When Moeen  Ali and Gary Ballance fell in the final half hour of a baking-hot London day, the momentum swung back in India's favour, with England closing on 219-6 in reply to India's 295/10
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was comfortably the pick of India's bowlers, getting the ball to swing from a full length and claiming 4-46.

    Day Three Saturday July 19,2014
At the start of the day, England lost Prior, Broad and Ben Stokes in quick succession but were bolstered by a last-wicket partnership of 39 between James Anderson and Plunkett, who completed his first Test fifty.
Ben Stokes's last nine England innings have yielded five ducks and a highest score of five
England scored 319/10 in the 1st Innings taking a lead of 24 Runs
Liam Plunkett(55*) and James Anderson(19) push England beyond India's total
Bhuvneshwar took 6/82, so becoming the first Indian player to take five wickets in successive Tests in England
list of India bowlers who have taken five or more wickets in a Test innings at Lord's:

Joe Root takes excellent catch off Ben Stokes ball to remove Dhawan
Two wickets in two balls from Liam Plunkett then stem India's progress
Rahane controversially given out when Broad ball hits arm guard

Liam Plunkett was twice on a Test hat-trick against Sri Lanka at Headingley to no avail and now he failed for a third time to claim one of bowling’s most notable achievements when he almost bowled a wide to Ajinkya Rahane
Just as India were assuming control with a 2nd-wicket partnership of 78,Liam Plunkett removed Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli before Stuart Broad benefitted from an umpiring error to add the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane in the evening session of the third day.
3 wickets for 5 runs in 19 balls brought England right back into contention. India were reduced from 118-1 to 123-4
Murali Vijay held firm to reach 59 not out and captain Mahendra Dhoni rode his luck to make an unbeaten 12 as India closed on 169-4 in their second innings, 145 ahead

India have lost more Tests at Lord's than at any other venue, but it will take a formidable bowling performance by England on the fourth morning for them to lose this one

Only two sides have chased more than 218 to win a Test at Lord's - the West Indies' 344-1 in 1984 and England's 282-3 against New Zealand 10 years ago

    Day Four Sunday July 20,2014

Kapil Dev rang the bell to signal the start of day four at Lord's
Murali Vijay scored 95, Ravi Jadeja a swashbuckling 68 off 57 balls and Bhuvneshwar Kumar 52 Runs help India progress quickly from their overnight 169-4 to 342 all out

Ravindra Jadeja scored his maiden Test Match Fifty and Bhuvneshwar Kumar scored his 3rd Fifty in the 4 innings of the 1st and 2nd Test Match against England

Ravindra Jadeja (68 off 57 balls) has recorded his highest score in Tests – his maiden fifty, eclipsing the 43 off 49 balls vs Australia at Delhi in March 2013

Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the third all-rounder to post a fifty and take five wickets in an innings in the same match in consecutive Tests, joining Richard Hadlee and Ian Botham.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the fifth number nine batsman to amass 200 runs or more in a series, joining Stuart Broad (England), Asif Iqbal (Pakistan) and Graeme Swann (England) and Daniel Vettori (New Zealand).
Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the first number nine batsman to post three half-centuries in a Test series. After 3 wickets in the morning session had reduced India to 235-7,Ravindra Jadeja tore into James Anderson and Stuart Broad in a counter-attacking 8th-wicket stand of 99 Runs with Bhuvneshwar Kumar in 16.3 overs. The all-round skills of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja came to the fore just at the right time for India

India have set England a target of 319 to win the second Test at Lord's

Set 319 to win, England lost 3 wickets for 2 Runs(from 70/1 to 72/4)including England Captain Alastair Cook for 22, to end the day at 105-4 with Joe Root and Moeen Ali were at the crease batting on 14 and 15 respectively.

Since recording 51 vs Australia at Melbourne in December 2013, Alastair Cook has not scored even 30 in nine innings

Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Sam Robson in the 7th over to give India an early breakthrough and the score 70/1.England then lost 3 wickets in the space of 14 deliveries with the addition of just two runs to slip from a comfortable 70 for 1 to 72 for 4

Ishant Sharma dismissed Ian Bell (1) and Alastair Cook (22) in quick succession to put India in command after Mohammad Shami got rid of Gary Ballance to break the 58-run partnership between him and Alastair Cook.

Gary Ballance (27) pushed into a delivery from Mohammed Shami, and was caught behind by M S Dhoni for the wicketkeeper's 250th catch in test cricket.

Only West Indies successfully chased a fourth-innings total at Lord's in excess of the 319 laid before them against England in the 2nd Test Match at Lord's in 1984
    Scorecard
    England 286 and 300/9 Declared
WI 245 and 344/1 -Gordon Greenidge 214* and Larry Gomes 92*
Match Result -West Indies won by 9 wickets

On the final day, it will be an uphill task for England to chase down the total, which will be their second highest after the 332 they chased in an Ashes Test at the MCG way back in 1928-29

Six wickets away, India stand as firm favourites to repeat what they last did 28 years back in 1986 - winning a Test match at Lord's

The win will incidentally also break India's winless streak in overseas Tests that has extended to three years and 14 Tests until the ongoing Lord's Test.

    Day Five Monday July 21,2014

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, looking rather distinguished in his blue blazer, rings the bell at Lord's and the players enter their arena

England resumed on 105-4, with Joe Root and Moeen Ali at the crease

Joe Root (66) and Moeen Ali (39) gave England hope with a partnership of 101 to take them to 173-4
Moeen Ali was dismissed by Ishant Sharma with the last ball before lunch at Lord's
Moeen Ali, Matt Prior, Ben Stokes and Joe Root all out to short ball
England lost six wickets for 50 runs either side of lunch to be bowled out for 229
India seamer Ishant Sharma takes career-best 7/74
It was India's first away victory in 16 Tests, a sequence dating back to 2011, and their first at Lord's since 1986
The defeat was England's seventh in nine matches, while 10 Tests without a victory is their worst sequence since 1992-93

Matt Prior succumb to the short ball when he was caught by Murali Vijay

Ben Stokes looks as the ball goes up into the air and is caught by Cheteshwar Pujara

Joe Root plays a reckless pull shot, again off Sharma, and is caught by Stuart Binny

James Anderson was the last man out when he was run out

India won by 95 Runs and lead the 5-Match Series 1-0
MOM -Ishant Sharma for his 7/74 in England 2nd Innings

The win is Dhoni’s 27th as captain. Now only Graeme Smith (53), Ricky Ponting (48), Steve Waugh (41), Clive Lloyd (36), Allan Border (32) and Stephen Fleming (28) have won more Tests as captain. Viv Richards and Hansie Cronje have also won 27 Tests.

5 Heroes of India's Historic Win At Lord's
Ajinkya Rahane, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Murali Vijay, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma played pivotal roles in India's historic triumph on Monday July 21,2014 which helped the visitors to their first Test win at Lord's since 1986 and only second overall in 82 years

If Ajinkya Rahane's century on day one laid the foundation, Ishant Sharma's hostile spell of fast bowling ended it in heroic fashion

Ajinkya Rahane, batting at No. 4, scored 103 and shared a crucial 90-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (36) to take India out of the woods from 145 for 7 after the top order failed

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled an exceptional spell of swing bowling in England's first innings to rattle the hosts and end with figures of 6/82
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's performance with the bat got another star in India's second innings when Bhuvneshwar struck his third half-century of the series in a 99-run eighth-wicket partnership with Ravindra Jadeja that helped India post 342 and set England a challenging target of 319

After erasing England's small lead of 24, India were in a relatively comfortable position at 118 for 1, but then lost three wickets in the space of five runs to slip to 123 for 4.
Murali Vijay continued his good work in the Indian 2nd innings and played a patient but classic Test knock of 95 in 247 balls

It was only due to Ravindra Jadeja's counter-attack and his partnership with Bhuvneshwar on day four that allowed India's lead to cross 300 and set England a stiff target of 319.

A career-best 7-74 by Ishant Sharma sucked life out of England to give India their first Test win at Lord's in 28 years.

Five wickets in eight overs (after two on the previous day) of bone-chilling Test-match fast bowling became part of cricketing folklore as Ishant Sharma ripped England apart with a barrage of short balls.

Ishant Sharma's figures are the fourth best by an Indian speedster away from home.
    • Kapil Dev had taken 8 for 85 vs Pakistan at Lahore in 1982-83 and 8 for 106 vs Australia at Adelaide in 1985-86
    • Anil Kumble had captured 10 for 74 vs Pakistan at Delhi in 1998-99 - the best ever

Two Indian fast bowlers - Bhuvneshwar Kumar 6 for 82 and Ishant Sharma 7 for 74 - for the first time in a Test match have bagged six or more wickets in an innings

This was India's first Test match win on foreign soil since they beat the West Indies by 63 runs in Kingston in June 2011, a sequence encompassing 10 defeats and five draws

India draw the first Test at Trent Bridge and extend England's winless run to nine matches
    Scorecard
    India -457 & 391/9 Declared
    England -496

Former England skippers Michael Vaughan and Alec Stewart have called on the England and Wales Cricket Board to take the captaincy off Alastair Cook

But Alastair Cook, who has not made a hundred in 27 innings, said: "To quit now, in the middle of the series, would be wrong."

Alastair Cook who took charge following Andrew Strauss's retirement in 2012, scoring three centuries in a series win in India and leading England to a 3-0 Ashes success last summer.
Since then,Alastair Cook has overseen a 5-0 whitewash by Australia down under and a 1-0 home defeat by Sri Lanka.

The defeat by India also means coach Moores is without a win in four Tests since he was re-appointed in April, but he remained supportive of Cook.
"Alastair has had a tough ride, through the winter and now," said Moores. "The tougher it gets, the more he wants to get stuck in and build this team. He realises that's not an easy job.
"We have to support people and it's great to see he's got the stomach for that fight.
"It's difficult to captain when you're not scoring runs. He's an outstanding player and individual and time will show that. He'll come back stronger."

Wicketkeeper Matt Prior is to stand down from England duty for the rest of the summer because of injury.
The 32-year-old Sussex player, who has won 79 Test caps, is likely to have surgery on his Achilles.
He emphasised that he is not retiring but accepted that he might not get his England place back.
"It is a huge decision and not one I've taken lightly, but I'm not doing justice to myself and more importantly the team," he said.
Matt Prior, who became the first debutant England wicketkeeper to hit a century in 2007, added: "I've made my decision for the good of the team and whoever comes in I genuinely wish them the best of luck.
"If I don't play again, I'll be disappointed because there are a few things that I wanted to achieve and thought I would.

    Which Tests will Prior miss?

Third Test v India (27 July)
Fourth Test v India (7 August)
Fifth Test v India (15 August)

Lancashire's Jos Buttler is likely to replace Prior in the third Test, which starts at Hampshire's Ageas Bowl on Sunday July 27,2014
