Abdul Hamid Elected Bangladesh's New President Uncontested - Monday April 22,2013


Abdul Hamid(DOB January 1, 1941) is to be Bangladesh’s 20th president after no other candidate was nominated in the poll to replace President Zilliur Rahman who died last month, election authorities said on Monday April 22,2013

The ballot by the 350-seat Parliament, normally required for the largely ceremonial position of President and planned for April 29, would not take place given the absence of another candidate

Chief Election Commissioner(CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed has said they will formally declare the lone candidate Hamid as the President after screening the nomination papers. The CEC said Hamid would be declared President as per Section 7 of the Presidential Election Act 1991

Abdul Hamid turned out to be the only one to have filed his nomination on Monday April 22,2013 that was earmarked for scrutiny.The leaders of the Ruling Awami League Party Headed by Senior Party Member Tofail Ahmed submitted Hamid's Nomination Papers

Abdul Hamid is a 7-time Jatiya Sangsad MP has been Speaker twice and is a long time aide to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Abdul Hamid has been acting president since March 14,2013 when President Zilliur Rahman(84) went for medical treatment to Singapore, where he died of respiratory problems on March 20,2013

Abdul Hamid sworn in as Bangladesh President 

 

Parliamentary Speaker Abdul Hamid was on April 24,2013 Wednesday sworn in as Bangladesh President  by the acting Speaker of Parliament Shawkat Ali who administered the oath at the Bangabahaban Presidential Palace, two days after election authorities declared Mr. Hamid as elected unopposed as the country’s 20th President
