Japan Observes Second Anniversary of Earthquake and Tsunami - March 11, 2011- March 11, 2013


Japan on Monday March 11,2013 marked the second anniversary of a devastating earthquake and tsunami, which caused the nation’s worst nuclear disaster.

More than 18,500 people died or went missing in the March 11 twin natural disasters in north-eastern Japan, with about 400,000 houses and other buildings destroyed.According to an official tally, 15,881 people died in the disaster and 2,668 others remain unaccounted for.

On Sunday March 10,2013, thousands of people marched in Tokyo urging an end to the use of nuclear power. Japan's 50 nuclear reactors were shut down for checks after the earthquake and only two have since been turned on again.
