Indian Presidential Election - July 19,2012






The 14th indirect Presidential Election to elect the 13th President will be taking place on July 19,2012.




The election for the 14th President of India has been fixed for July 19. Votes will be counted, if needed, on July 22, said Chief Election Commissioner V Sampath on Tuesday June 12,2012

The Chief Election Commissioner announced that the notification for the Presidential poll will be issued on June 16 and the last date of nomination is June 30. The nomination papers will be scrutinized on July 2 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidatures is July 4,2012.




Candidates 

1)Pranab Mukherjee filed his nomination on 28 June 28,2012 with the support of the INC's Manmohan Singh, Party President Sonia Gandhi, General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, the RJD's leader Lalu Prasad Yadav , the RLD'sAjit Singh, the LJP's Ram Vilas Paswan,the national Conference's Farooq Abdullah,the IUML's E Ahmed and DMK's T R Balu
 




2)P. A. Sangma filed his nomination papers with the support of the Orissan Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Punjab CM Prakash Singh Padal, Goa CM Manohar Parrikar, BJP Party President Nitin Gadkari and party leaders L K Advani,Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley
                                                                          




It is to be noted that till July 10,2012 TMC's Mamta Banerjee is yet to support any of the above two candidates.


The last date for filing nominations is June 30, 2012, whereas the votes would be counted on July 22, 2012

Presidential election: The process
The President of India is elected by an electoral college comprising MPs and MLAs.
- 776 MPs, all except nominated ones, cast their vote.
- 4120 MLAs cast their vote.
- 708 votes is the value of each MP's vote.
- Meanwhile, the value of an MLA's vote is variable. It depends on the population of the state the MLA represents.

Support for Pranab: UPA (+TMC) + RJD + SP + BSP + JDS + CPM + FB + NDA allies (Shiv Sena and JDU) = 66.7 %
Support for Sangma: BJP + SAD + JMM + BJD + AIADMK = 30.3 %
Undecided parties: TDP + others = 3 %

 



There have been 12 Presidents of India as of June 2012 since the introduction of the post in 1950.

Pranab Mukerjee Wins the Presidential Election - Sunday July 23,2012

Pranab Mukheree got 373,116 MP votes and 340,647 MLA votes for a total of 713,763 votes  and defeated Sangma, who got 145,848 MP votes and 170,139 MLA votes for a total of 315,987 votes to win the election.
Out of the total 748 MPs, Pranab got the support of 527 while his rival, PA Sangma polled 206 votes in his favour.
Fifteen votes including that of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav were invalid. Of these, nine were to be in favour of Mukherjee while six for Sangma.
