Delhi Municipal Elections - Sunday April 15,2012


Delhiites will seal the electoral fate of 2,423 candidates when they hit the polling booths on Sunday April 15,2012 to elect councillors for the newly-carved three municipal bodies in the capital - -- East, North and South carved out from Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)

With campaigning ending at an unusualtime of 5:30 am on Saturday April 14,2012, political parties and candidates, a large chunk of them independents, spent a sleepless night wooing voters at the last minute.

A total of 55 polling stations have been identified as hyper-sensitive while 275 have been declared as sensitive out of 11,500 polling stations.

A total of 1.12 crore eligible voters will be able to exercise their franchise in the polls which include 42.95 lakh voters in North Delhi Municipal Corporation, 42.67 lakh voters in South Delhi corporation and 27.16 lakh voters in East Delhi corporation.

There are 104 wards each in South and North Corporations and 64 in the East. Of these, 138 seats are Reserved for Women. South has the Highest Number of 904 candidates followed by North (885) and East (634)
There are a total of 1,15,20,508 -- 64.42 lakh men and 50.75 lakh women -- eligible voters.


The main contenders are BJP and Congress, the ruling and opposition block respectively in the current MCD, but smaller parties like Samajwadi Party and BSP are giving sleepless nights to them.

The BJP, which has 164 councillors in the undivided MCD against Congress' 67 and BSP's 17, has been harping on alleged corruption by Dikshit government while the Congress has been targeting the saffron party on its "inefficient and corrupt" administration in MCD.

In the 2007 polls to the undivided Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the BJP had bagged 36.17% of around 42.35 lakh votes polled while the Congress got 29.17%. The BSP's vote share was 9.87%.

The counting of votes will take place at 33 locations on Tuesday April 17,2012.

The counting of votes for 272 wards began at 33 centres across the capital at 8 this morning amid tight security. The results are expected to come in by 3 pm, a senior State Election Commission official said.

Of the 17 results declared by the State Election Commission so far, BJP has bagged 16 wards in all the three corporations while Congress has won one seat.

According to latest trends available till 11.30 am for the total 272 wards, BJP is ahead in 142 seats, Congress in 85, BSP in 12 seats, while independents were leading in 33 seats.

North Delhi Trends - BJP leading in 60;INC in 31 and BSP in 4Seats out of the total 104 Seats  

East Delhi Trends  -BJP leading in 34;INC in 20 and BSP in 3 Seats out of the total 64 Seats  

South Delhi Trends - BJP leading in 48;INC in 36 and BSP in 15 Seats out of the total 104 Seats

The BJP has swept the MCD Polls, by winning 138 seats out of the 272 seats in the trifurcated body. Congress has bagged 78 seats, while BSP has got 15 seats and others including independent, have got 41 seats.
