FIFA World Cup Winners from 1930 to 2014

FIFA World Cup is contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the WW II

The 20 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight national teams.

Brazil  have won 5 times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament.

The other World Cup winners are Germany and Italywith four titles each

Argentina and inaugural winner Uruguay with two titles each and

England ,France and Spain with one title each.

Most World Cup wins
5 - Brazil have won the World Cup on five occasions (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002)

Most World Cup appearances
21 - Brazil is the only team to play in all editions of the FIFA tournament. The Russia World Cup will be their 21st appearance in the quadrennial event.
The Selcao are also the most successful side in terms of matches won by a side. Across 20 tournaments, Brazil have registered 70 wins. The record for most matches played is held by Germany with 106 games.

Uruguay (1930) and Italy (1934) hold the record for winning the World Cup on their debut

Matches with most goals
12 - The 1954 quarter-final between Austria and Switzerland finished 7-5 in the favour of Austria

Most championships
3 - Brazil's Pele (158, 1962 and 1970) is the only player to win three World Cup trophies. The forward had played the first two matches in the 1962 edition and the medal was awarded to him retroactively by FIFA in 2007

Most goals in a single edition
13 - France's Just Fontaine scored 13 goals and all of them came in the six matches of 1958 World Cup

Most hat-tricks
2 - Sandor Kocsis (Hungary, 1954), Just Fontaine (France, 1958), Gerd Muller (West Germany, 1970) and Gabriel Batistuta (Argentina, 1994 & 1998)

Fastest hat-trick - Hungary's Laszlo Kiss scored a hat-trick in a space of eight minutes against El Salvador in 1982. He scored in 69th, 72nd and 76th minutes.

Youngest goalscorer - Pele scored his first World Cup goal aged 17 years, 7 months and 27 days against Wales in 1958

Oldest goalscorer - Cameroon's Roger Milla holds the record. He scored against Russia aged 42 years, 1 month and 8 days in 1994

Fastest goal - Turkey's Hakan Sukur scored in the 11th second of the match against South Korea in 2002

Youngest player - Northern Ireland's Norman Whiteside holds the record after he made his World Cup debut at the age of 17 years and 41 days against Yugoslavia at the 1982 edition

Oldest player -Colombia's Faryd Mondragon became the oldest when he played against Japan aged 43 years and 3 days in the last World Cup

Most tournament participation
5 - Germany's Lothar Matthaeus, Mexico's Antonio Carbajal and Italy's Gianluigi Buffon have competed in five editions
