5 Reasons That Makes The Second Test a Must-watch


1) SSC to host 41st Test match - Tied for most Tests played at a single venue

The Sinhalese Sports Club Ground will host its 41st Test match when Sri Lanka take on India in the second Test. The SSC is now tied for the top spot along with the National Stadium in Karachi for most Tests played at a single venue in Asia, although it must be kept in mind that Pakistan has not hosted a Test match since 2009. The next Sri Lankan venue to have hosted the most number of Test matches is the P Sara Oval, again in Colombo, which has hosted 21 matches.

2) Sri Lanka's most successful Test venue

The SSC Ground has witnessed the most Sri Lankan victories in Tests – 19. Given a cut-off of 10 Test matches, the SSC is the venue where Sri Lanka have their best win-loss ratio in Tests of 2.714.

3) Cheteshwar Pujara to play 50th Test match



Cheteshwar Pujara is set to become the 31st Indian cricketer to reach the milestone of playing 50 Test matches for the country when he takes the field in the second Test. The last time Pujara played on this ground, in 2015, he made a sensational comeback to the Indian team by scoring an unbeaten 145 while opening the innings and carried his bat through the innings. He has had an outstanding 2017 so far, having managed to score 710 runs in 6 Test matches at a staggering average of 71.00.

4) Pujara could become third fastest Indian to 4000 Test runs

If Pujara gets 34 runs in the 1st innings, he will become the joint third fastest Indian to 4000 Tests runs, Virender Sehwag (77 innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (81 innings). He will equal the record of Rahul Dravid (84 innings) if he reaches the 34-run mark.

5) Virat Kohli to play 100th Test Innings 

Indian captain Virat Kohli will play 100th innings when he comes out to bat in India's first innings. He has scored 4603 runs so far at an average of 50.03.

Enroute to India's 101 for the loss of one wicket, Rahul notched up his eighth Test fifty, thus thumping back his dominance in the longer format of the game



This was also his sixth consecutive Test fifty with the last five scores standing as – 51 n.o, 60, 67, 51, 90


Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane scored hundreds while KL Rahul contributed with a well-deserved fifty on return. Rahane and Pujara stitched together a brilliant unbeaten partnership as they steadied the innings after losing the wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s century was his 3rd in a row and his 13th Test Ton

Cheteshwar Pujara has been the man of the moment as he completes his 13th Test match century in his 50th game 


Pujara was an epitome of patience facing 225 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six while Rahane was more attacking in his 168-ball effort, that had 12 boundaries.

En route his second successive hundred in the series, Pujara also completed 4000 Test runs. His sequence of Test scores over the past few Test matches before the current one - 17, 92, 202, 57, 153.
He also became the seventh Indian batsman to score a century in his 50th Test match. The illustrious six before him are Polly Umrigar (1961) Gundappa Viswanath (1979), Kapil Dev (1983), VVS Laxman (2004) and Virat Kohli (2016). He also became the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to score hundreds in three consecutive Tests in Sri Lanka.
While crossing the 4000-run mark in Test cricket, becoming the fourth-quickest Indian batsman to do so after Sunil Gavaskar (81 innings in 43 Tests), Virender Sehwag (81 innings in 49 Tests) and Rahul Dravid (84 innings in 48 Tests). Pujara reached the landmark in his 84th innings and 50th Test.


 

Ajinkya Rahane scores 9th Test hundred, 6th outside India

Ajinkya Rahane has so far played 39 test matches and scored more than 2700 runs at an average of 48.40. He also has 13 half centuries to his name. Against Sri Lanka, he has been consistently in good form and scored more than 350 runs in 5 Tests.

India virtually batted Sri Lanka out of the second Test by crossing the 600-run mark for the second game in a row, setting themselves up for another big win on a pitch that is offering plenty to the spinners.
India, resuming the day at 344 for three, went on to declare at 622 for nine post tea, thanks to half centuries from Ravichandran Ashwin (54 off 92), Wriddhiman Saha (67 off 134) and Ravindra Jadeja (70 not out off 85).
Overnight centurions Cheteshwar Pujara (133) and Ajinkya Rahane (132) could not add much to their overnight score.
