Puducherry Assembly passes Resolution Against Lt Governor Kiran Bedi Friday June 16,2017

The Puducherry Assembly on Friday June 16,2017 passed a resolution asking the Centre to decrease the powers of Lt Governor Kiran Bedi for not cooperating with the democratically-elected government.

This comes amid an ongoing tussle for power between Bedi and the Congress government in the union territory.

In the resolution, the assembly accused Bedi of not cooperating with the legislature, affecting many people-related schemes.

The assembly has asked the Centre for reforms to change the role of the Lt Governor and give more powers to the democratically elected government. The resolution was placed before the house by ADMK MLA Anbazgahan.

Trouble began on May 30 when Bedi conducted a surprise inspection of the counselling process by the Centralised Admission Committee in Puducherry and directed officials to ensure that 50% of seats available under government quota were filled, not given to private colleges or under all India quota.

Three days later, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy lashed out at Bedi and accused her of adopting a ' misleading approach'. In the assembly, he alleged that Bedi was criticising ministers and that she should not make derogatory remarks.

Bedi hit back and questioned Narayanasamy, asking if he wanted a rubber stamp or a responsible administrator as the LG of Puducherry.

The two have been at loggerheads she assumed the post of the LG.
