2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil Aug 05-21,2016 - Kenya's Jemima Jelagat Sumgong Wins Gold Medal in the Women's Marathon Sunday Aug 14,2016

Kenyan Jemima Jelagat Sumgong won gold in the women's Olympic marathon on Sunday Aug 14,2016 in 2:24:04to become the first Kenyan woman to take the title.

Bahrain's Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa claimed silver 2:24:13 and Ethiopian Mare Dibaba snatched the bronze 2:24:30

The Rio marathon route began at the Sambodromo, the backdrop of Rio’s famous Carnival parade. It then led runners through the streets of the city before taking them to three laps of a loop along the bayfront.

The course took competitors along major thoroughfares and past museums, parks and other landmarks but it offered little shade on a day that began as warm and became hotter as the race went on. Runners began to show the stress early, as some slowed dramatically

Women marathoners O P Jaisha and Kavita Raut were also out of depth and finished way behind in 89th and 120th spots clocking unimpressive time of 2 hours, 47 minutes, 19 seconds and 2:59:29 respectively

Note

The Marathon is a long-distance running event with an official distance of 42.195 Kms (26.219 miles, or 26 miles 385 yards) usually run as a Road Race

The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Philippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory
