Two years after 'Faith' crumbled killing 61 people at Moulivakkam near Porur, in west Chennai, its twin tower `Belief' is set to face the sledgehammer.
The Supreme Court of India(SCI) on Thursday May 12,2016 ordered the demolition of `Belief ', the second 12-storey building standing a few metres from `Faith' that collapsed on June 28, 2014
The SCI accepted the recommendation of a three-member expert committee that made a spot inspection a few weeks ago and concluded that the building could not be allowed to be completed or put to use.
Prime Sristi Housing Pvt Ltd had built two towers -The Faith and The Belief -with 12 floors each. After Faith crumbled, safety concerns were raised over Belief as well.
Even though the Kancheepuram district collector passed at least two demolition orders, they couldn't be carried out as high court struck them down on technical grounds.
After the matter was taken to the SCI a three-member committee was formed to inspect the building.
On Thursday, the court accepted the report of the panel which pointed to several shortcomings that would have affected the structural stability of the building weakened by the fall of its twin structure. The court directed the authorities and the promoter to raze the second structure.
