An Earpiece That Translates Conversations in Real Time

From Skype Translator to Google Translate, today's intuitive translation tools allow users to communicate with increasing ease with people who speak different languages.

A new device promises to take multilingual communication to the next level, with an earpiece that translates foreign languages in real time.

The American tech firm, Waverley Labs, is on a mission to break down the language barrier once and for all with The Pilot.

This clever earpiece allows people who speak different languages to communicate by translating one person's words vocally and discreetly directly into the other's ear.

The Pilot works in conjunction with a dedicated mobile application, which, for the time being, is only compatible with Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian) and Germanic languages (German, Dutch), as well as English. Additional languages, such as Arabic, Hindi and Chinese, are set to follow.

After over two years in development, the device is set to go up for pre-order by the end of May 2016 via the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform.

It'll be sold as a pack of two earpieces, with prices for early buyers starting at $150, and rising to $299 for the final roll-out.

However, The Pilot isn't expected to ship before spring 2017.
