Apple named Jeff Williams as its chief operating officer Thursday, a job that hasn't been filled since Tim Cook left the position more than four years ago to become CEO.

Jeff Williams who joined Apple in 1998, previously served as senior vice president of operations and oversaw development of the Apple Watch, the company’s first new product since the iPad in 2010 and served as a test for whether Apple can still churn out the type of game-changing products that were a hallmark of the Jobs era
Apple named Jeff Williams, above at an Apple event in San Francisco in September, as its next chief operating officer. 

Jeff Williams is often referred to as “Tim Cook’s Tim Cook,” a nod to the important operations role that the Apple chief played for former CEO Steve Jobs before his death. Mr. Williams fills a role that had been vacant since Mr. Cook’s ascension to CEO in 2011
