Manpreet Kaur defined her prowess in shot put
by breaking the country's record at the 55th National Open Athletics
Championships in Kolkata. Mandeep with her stupendous 17.96m throw also
bagged a berth for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games to be held in Brazil.
It was a remarkable throw considering the national record set 18 years ago by Harbans Kaur was 17.43m.
Mandeep broke previous record holder Harbans Kaur’s national mark.
Her throw ensured she was well ahead of the qualification standard which
was 17.80m for Rio 2016. The Railways athlete was supreme and dictated
terms in the field.
Another Manpreet, from ONGC, finished second nearly three meters
behind with a best throw of 15.03m, while Ramanpreet Kaur from Punjab
bagged the bronze with a throw of 14.36m.
