On the last Wednesday of every August, trucks hauling thousands of pounds of tomatoes grown and harvested specifically for this day head for Plaza del Pueblo, the town square.
Before the tomato-throwing could begin, a Spanish ham is to be retrieved from the top of a greased pole at the square. Revellers must squash the tomatoes before throwing at others and participants wear protective eyewear to avoid injuries.
As the festival enters its 70th year, Doodler Nate Swinehart captures the innocuous chaos with an animated doodle that shows Google covered with tomatoes.
