The Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System, a state-owned subsidiary of Indian Railways is a metropolitan elevated railway line operated by Souther Railway
It is the first elevated railway line in India.Although it is segregated from the Chennai Suburban Railway,they both are operated by Southern Railway and are integrated in a wider rapid transit network.
Built at a cost of 11,710 million,the line runs within the city limits from Chennai Beach to Velachery , covering a distance of 19.34 km (12.02 mi) with 17 stations

- Work on Phase I from Chennai Beach to Thirumayilai for 8.55 kms was taken up in 1983-84
- Services from Chennai Beach to Chepauk inaugurated by the then tN CM J Jayalalithaa on Nov 16,1995
- Chennai MRTS stretch extended to Thiruvanmiyur on October 19,1997
- Work on Phase II from Thirumayilai to Velachet commenced in 1997-98
- First Train stops at Thiruvanmiyur on June 26,2004
- Extension of Chennai MRTS services to velachey commenced by the then TN CM M Karunanidhi on Nov 19,207
- Work on extension from Velachery t o St.Thomas Mount commenced in April 2008
