Former Tamil
Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, who has been in jail for three
weeks after her conviction in a corruption case, got a major reprieve on
Friday with the Supreme Court granting her
bail
“We
are suspending the sentence and releasing the petitioner on bail. You
prepare the paperbook (case documents and file) and keep it ready in two
months. Then we will tell the high court to hear the appeal in three
months.
But
if the paperbook is not ready in two months, we will not give you a day
more and cancel the bail,” Chief Justice H.L. Dattu, heading a
three-judge bench, told her lawyer Fali.S. Nariman in a jampacked court
at the end of an hour-long hearing.
Also the court granted bail to Jayalalithaa’s
close aide Sasikala, the ex-CM’s disowned foster-son V.N. Sudhakaran and
Sasikala’s relative Ilavarasi.
Just before passing the bail order, Dattu
said in a lighter vein: “I heard there was criticism — caricatures and
cartoons in the media — that she was not granted bail by the Karnataka
High Court as the judge was a Kannadiga. See I’m also a Kannadiga. I may
be criticised if I grant bail. But for we judges, we are not bothered
about what others say. We only go by our conscience.”

Ahead of her release, Section 144 has been imposed around the Bangalore Central Jail where Jayalalithaa was lodged
The Special Court in Bangalore on Saturday Oct 18,2014 issued the order for
release of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa from jail here in accordance
with the Supreme Court order granting her bail in the disproportionate
assets case.
The release order by Special Judge John
Michael D’Cunha came after a bond for Rs two crore was furnished and
surety of assets offered. Copy of the Supreme Court order was also
produced before the court by Ms Jayalalithaa’s lawyers.
Ms. Jayalalithaa’s close aide Sasikala and her relatives Sudhakaran and Elavarasi also fulfilled similar conditions.

A special court in Bangalore had convicted
the AIADMK on September 27 after finding her guilty of amassing wealth
disproportionate to her known sources of income during her first tenure
as chief minister during 1991-96 and sentenced her to four years in
jail

J Jayalalithaa, is the first politician to get bail in 21 days of incarceration either after conviction or during the trial stage.
The former Bihar Chief Minister, Lalu Prasad, convicted in the fodder scam case, got bail after nearly a year.
The
former Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, who was convicted
and sentenced for 10 years in a corruption case, got interim bail on
medical grounds after remaining in prison for over two months.
As
for pre-conviction incarceration, YSR Congress leader Jaganmohan Reddy
remained behind bars for over a year in a disproportionate assets case.
The
Supreme Court granted bail to Satyam Computers Services Ltd.
founder-chairman B. Ramalinga Raju, his brother B. Rama Raju and former
Chief Financial Officer Vadlamani Srinivas after they remained in jail
for over two years and eight months.
Mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy, arrested in March 2012, is still in jail.
In the 2G scam, the former Telecom Minister, A. Raja, and Kanimozhi got bail after a year in jail.
