2014 Maldives Parliamentary Election Saturday March 22,2014



 Maldives, officially the Republic of the Maldives and also referred to as the Maldive Islands, is an Island Nation in the Indian Ocean-Arabian Sea area, consisting of a double chain of 26 atolls, oriented north-south, that lie between Minicoy Island (the southernmost part of Lakshadweep,India) and theChagos Archipelago

The chains stand in the Laccadive Sea, about 700 kilometres (430 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometres (250 mi) south-west of India.


The Parliament Election in Maldives is scheduled for Saturday March 22,2014 to elect the 77 seats in the People's Majlis(Maldives Parliament)who are elected in single-member constituencies using the first past the post system


The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party(MDP) led by former president Mohamed Nasheed is challenging the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives led by incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.

It is the first parliamentary election since Abdullah Yameen took office in 2013.


39 seats are required for majority in the People's Majlis

The 2009 Maldives Parliamentary Election was held on May 09,2009 and on March 9, 2009, the Elections Commission of the Maldives announced there will be 214,405 eligible voter

Results of the 2009  Maldives Parliamentary Election
  • Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party(DRP) got 40886 votes securing 24.62% of votes and 28 seats

  • Maldivian Democratic Party(MDP) got 51184 votes securing 30.81% of votes and 26 seats

  • People's Alliance got 8283  votes securing 4.99% of votes and 07 seats
  • Dhivehi Qaumee Party got 5854  votes securing 3.52% of votes and 02 seats
  • Republican Party got 7001 votes securing 4.22% of votes and 01 seats
  • Independent  got 49835 votes securing 30.00% of votes and 13 seats
