Egypt Court Orders Hosni Mubarak’s Release Wednesday Aug 21,2013

An Egyptian court on Wednesday Aug 21,2013 ordered the release of ousted President Hosni Mubarak in a corruption case against him.

The criminal court in Cairo decided to release the 85-year-old leader pending further investigation of corruption charges against him.

The ruling does not mean Hosni Mubarak will be immediately released and also does not mean Hosni Mubarak has been acquitted on charges of taking about USD 11 million worth of gifts from Al-Ahram, the state-run newspaper

He will remain in prison for at least 48 hours pending a possible appeal by prosecutors

Hosni Mubarak is being tried with his sons, who also deny charges against them, ex-Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and six other former officials

The charges

• Hosni Mubarak: Conspiring in killing of protesters (15 years in prison or death penalty); abusing power to amass wealth (5-15 years)
• Alaa and Gamal Mubarak: abusing power to amass wealth (5-15 years)
• Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and six aides: Conspiring in killing of protesters (15 years or death penalty)
• Hussein Salem, business tycoon and Mubarak confidant: tried in absentia for corruption (5-15 years in prison)

Hosni Mubarak,the ex-president, who ruled Egypt for nearly 30 years was ousted in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution and detained shortly after, remains in prison pending investigations

Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison last year, but a retrial was ordered earlier this year. His next court hearing is scheduled for August 25,2013

Hosni Mubarak is also facing retrial in connection with charges of killing protesters during the 2011 revolution.

Mubarak released from prison

Former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak was released from prison on Thursday Aug 22,2013 over two years after he was jailed on charges of corruption and for killing protesters
Mubarak has been released from prison, according to state television. The 85-year-old longtime autocrat was taken from Cairo’s Tora prison by medical helicopter, following a court ruling which ordered his release
He was initially taken to a military hospital in Maadi, a suburb in southern Cairo.
Mubarak will still remain under house arrest pending trial.
