Gateway of India(Mumba,iformerly Bombay,India)


The Gateway of India(26 metres (85 feet) high) is a monument in Mumbai(formerly Bombay)India built during the British Raj India located on the waterfront overlooking the Arabian Sea at the end of Chhatrpati Sivaji Marg in the Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai.

The monument was erected to commemorate the landing of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary when they visited India in 1911.The foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid on March 31, 1911. The final design of George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed in 1924.
The gateway was opened on Dec 04, 1924, by the Viceroy,the Earl of Reading

Opposite the gateway stands the statue of Chhatrpati Sivaji Statue unveiled on Jan 26, 1961
