In Assam and Gujarat, giant national flags were unfurled on 72nd Independence Day raising the patriotic fervour.

In Assam's Goreswar, a local club on Wednesday took out a rally with a 3.5 km long national flag to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day. The club members along with hundreds of people held the
giant flag above their heads while they were moving on the main thoroughfare.

The large flag was made to arouse national pride among the youngsters and honour the Assam Athlete Hima Das, who is the first Indian to win a gold medal in a track event at the World Junior Athletics Championship in Finland this year, said a club member AP Oli.

The cotton flag was made by 45 members of the club, stitched by eight tailors who did not charge any money for their labour and supported the Baksa district administration besides local politicians, said another member Nayan Newar.

The District Administration of Kamrup Metropolitan District, Guwahati, has appealed to the people not to use plastic flag which violates the 'Flag Code of India, 2002'.

The use of plastic flag amounts to showing disrespect to the National Flag", said a district administration statement.

Thousands came out on street to cheer and celebrate Independence Day. Enthusiasm was at its peak and people shared their pictures with the grand flag on social media.

An 1,100 feet-long, 9 feet-wide national flag was unfurled with thousands of people taking part in a 5 km-long 'Shaan-e-Tiranga' rally, organised by the Agrawal Vikas Trust. The idea behind the rally was to deliver the message that nationalism was greater than any religion as people from various religious communities came together to take part in it.

This was the biggest 'Tiranga Yatra' organised in Gujarat so far. The flag was made from a 5,000 meter-long cloth, and it took 12 days for 200 people to produce the flag.

Ayushman Bharat Scheme - All You Need To Know

 Ayushman Bharat Scheme often referred to as 'Modicare' was officially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today Aug 15,2018 in his Independence Day speech.

This flagship project will be launched on Sep 25,2018

The ambitious Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM) aims to provide coverage of Rs. 5 lakh per family annually, benefiting more than 10 crore poor families, according to a release issued by PIB (Press Information Bureau).

The scheme will target poor, deprived rural families and identified occupational category of urban workers' families, 8.03 crore in rural and 2.33 crore in urban areas, as per the latest SECC (Socio Economic Caste Census) data.

Eligibility details and benefits of PM Modis' Ayushman Bharat scheme

1. Ayushman Bharat scheme has a defined benefit cover of Rs. 5 lakh per family per year.

2. The target beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat scheme will be more than 10 crore families belonging to poor and vulnerable population based on SECC database.

3. This cover will take care of almost all secondary care and most of tertiary care procedures.

4.  Under this project, the entitlement will be decided on the basis of deprivation criteria in the SECC database. The different categories in rural area include families having only one room with kucha walls and kucharoof; families having no adult member between age 16 to 59; female headed households with no adult male member between age 16 to 59; disabled member and no able bodied adult member in the family; SC/ST households; and landless households deriving major part of their income from manual casual labour, as mentioned on the official website of Ayushman Bharat scheme-abnhpm.gov.in.

5. Automatically included families in rural areas having any one of the following: households without shelter, destitute, living on alms, manual scavenger families, primitive tribal groups, legally released bonded labour, will also come under this scheme. For urban areas, 11 defined occupational categories will be entitled under the scheme.

6. There will be no restriction on family size, age and gender under 'Ayushman Bharat' scheme to ensure that nobody is left out (especially women, children and elderly).

7. Under this scheme, the treatment in case of hospitalization will be free of cost for the family.

8. All pre-existing conditions will be covered from day one of the policy. The benefit cover will include pre and post hospitalization.

9. The beneficiary will be able to go to public or empaneled private hospitals across the country and get free treatment.

10. The beneficiary will only need to carry any prescribed ID to receive treatment at the hospital.

Gary Stead Replaces Mike Hesson As New Zealand Head Coach

New Zealand Cricket appointed former Test batsman Gary Stead as the new Black Caps coach on Wednesday Aug 15,2018, with pundits describing him as a steady pair of hands to replace predecessor Mike Hesson. Stead, 46, was a journeyman opening bat, playing just five Tests in 1999 before being dropped. But he has excelled as a coach, guiding Canterbury to domestic titles in 2014, 2015 and 2017. He also took the national women's team, the White Ferns, to the 209 World Cup final. Stead was given a two-year contract and said he wanted to continue the improvement the Black Caps had shown under Hesson.

"This is a well-established and high-performing Black Caps side with an excellent captain in Kane Williamson and a real desire to win series and titles," he said.

"It's an honour and a privilege to be part of that. I can't wait to get started."

Former batsman Peter Fulton said Stead would build on Hesson's legacy.

"He'll be very well organised, a lot of detail and a really good thinker about the game," he told Radio Sport.

"New Zealand Cricket have made it pretty obvious they were keen for someone who's going to come in and not rock the boat too much."

Vermont Democrats made Christine Hallquist the first openly transgender person to win a major party nomination for statewide office in U.S. history as she clinched Tuesday's primary election for governor.

She defeated three other Democrats on Tuesday and will take on incumbent Governor Phil Scott, a Republican, in the Nov. 6 general election, unofficial results showed

The contest comes at a time of uncertainty for transgender rights, which expanded under the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama. They have been reversed under Republican President Donald Trump's administration, a victory for religious conservatives who only recognize traditional gender roles.

Transgender candidates are hoping to build on the breakthrough year of 2017, when at least 10 won office across the country at levels ranging from state legislator to zoning (town planning) board - the most ever recorded.

This year, 43 transgender candidates have run for political office at all levels in the United States, most of them Democrats but a few running as independents, for the Green Party or for nonpartisan offices, according to Logan Casey, a research associate at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Hallquist is the first openly transgender candidate to win a major party nomination for governor or a statewide office of any kind.


 

2018 Maruti Suzuki Dzire Special Edition Launched at Rs 5.56 Lakh

Maruti Suzuki has launched a special edition of the Dzire compact sedan. The 2018 Maruti Suzuki Dzire Special Edition LXi is priced at Rs 5.56 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and the Dzire Special Edition LDi at Rs 6.56 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Based on the LXi/LDi variant, the Dzire gets added features apart from the standard equipment which results in a saving of Rs 30,000. As for the additional equipment, the special edition Dzire gets a 2-speaker music system with Bluetooth functionality, reverse parking sensors, front power windows, wheel cover and a central locking system.

The launch of the special edition Dzire comes around the time of the upcoming festive season which generally provides a boost to sales for Indian automakers. The fact that the special edition is based on the entry-level variant, Maruti could be pushing for sales of the base variant as buyers generally prefer the mid-level or top-level variants. The Maruti Dzire has ABS, EBD and Brake Assist, engine immobilizer, ISOFIX child anchorages dual front airbags as standard. Apart from this, the entry-level variant also gets LED taillights, steel wheels, AC, multi-information display and tilt steering.


The Dzire is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine which delivers 82 bhp and 113 Nm of torque and the 1.3-litre diesel engine that churns out 74 bhp and 190 Nm of torque. The fuel efficiency for the petrol engine is claimed to be 22 km/l and 28.4 km/l for the diesel engine. Hindustan Motors Ambassador

Launched - 1958

Long before Maruti came into the light, one car served as the face of Indian automobile industry – the Hindustan Motors Ambassador. Assembled by Hindustan Motors, the Ambassador was the first car to be locally assembled in India and based on the Morris Oxford from U.K. The first model they assembled was the Morris 10 which was sold as the Hindustan 10. Popularly called as the Amby, the big bulky car became a thing of luxury and necessity at the same time. Politicians, film stars and taxi owners, all used to own this car. Amby faced a huge competition from the aforementioned Maruti 800 and its usage was limited to the government transport and taxis by 1990s. In 2014, Hindustan Motors put the production of the Amby to rest and it wouldn't be wrong to say that despite being of British Origins, Amby was more Indian.

Maruti 800

Launched - 1983

There’s no car as powerful as the Maruti 800 in the history of Indian automobiles and by powerful we don’t mean a big engine or output. By powerful, we mean as impactful as the Maruti 800 and due to the obvious reasons. Maruti 800 served for more than 30 years, only to retire in 2005, to make way for the Maruti Suzuki Alto as the brand’s entry level offering. Known as the Suzuki SS in Japan, the car was launched in collaboration between the Japanese automajor Suzuki Motors and Indian Government. Emission norms and increasing pressure from feature rich cars forced Maruti to rethink over the product, and the company discontinued the 800 in metro cities followed by the rest of the India.

Hyundai Santro

Launched - 1997

Hyundai may be the second largest car maker in India right now, but nobody knew that the South Korean automajor will reach such heights in India in so less time. All thanks to the Hyundai Santro, the first tall-boy design hatchback of the country which was first launched in 1997. Known as the Hyundai Atos in Korea, the Santo challenged the mights of Maruti 800 and Tata Indica. The Santro proved a right gamble for Hyundai and the spacious cabin with good engine and handling made the hatchback a hit among urban buyers. That being said, the Honda has updated the City regularly ever since its launch and has become the largest selling premium car in India. In 2013, Honda shifted the City’s platform from Civic to Jazz and added a diesel engine to the line-up. M. Karunanidhi, five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president passes away Wednesday Aug 07,2018

M. Karunanidhi, five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president for nearly 50 years, died at 6.10 p.m. on August 7 after battling infection and age-related ailments for 11 days at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. Affectionately called ''Kalaignar'' (artiste and man of letters), he was 94.

 

M Karunanidhi,the five-time Chief Minister contested 13 consecutive elections since 1957, and to top it all, he won all of them.

His winning streak, spanning six decades, kicked off in Kulithalai in Karur district and meandered through Thanjavur, Saidapet, Anna Nagar, Harbour, and Chepauk, finally settling in Thiruvarur, the DMK patriarch's birthplace, where he won for the last time in the 2016 Assembly elections. Though DMK lost the elections, he registered an emphatic victory -- he was voted the MLA by a margin 68,366 votes, the largest margin he has ever won by

M Karunanidhi  is also the only T.N. Chief Minister whose government was dismissed twice -- in 1976 on charges of corruption and in 1991 for supporting the LTTE.

M Karunanidhi remains the only politician to have won Assembly elections from seven different constituencies. His aide K. Anbazhagan comes close -- ‘perasiriyar’ has won from five different constituencies.The only other Tamil Nadu politicians who have a comparable track record as MLAs are DMK's Mr. Anbazhagan and Durai Murugan, who have both been elected MLA nine times each. All the MLAs who have been elected over five times belong to DMK with the exception of Panruti S. Ramachandran, who has won once on a DMK ticket, four times on an AIADMK ticket and once on a PMK ticket.

M Karunanidhi also served the longest as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He was Chief Minister for 6,863 days in total across five terms. J. Jayalalithaa comes second, at 5,238 days, while M.G. Ramachandran clocked over 3,600 days as C.M.

Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill, 2018

During the Union Budget 2016-17, the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had promised “a comprehensive central legislation” to tackle illicit deposit schemes. Following this, the Union government has come up with two bills to tackle the menance of non-regulated deposit schemes. The Chit Funds (Amendment) Bill, 2018 was introduced in the Lok Sabha during the second leg of the Budget Session. The second Bill is Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill, 2018.

“The bill is aimed at tackling the menace of illicit deposit taking activities in the country. Companies/ institutions running such schemes exploit existing regulatory gaps and lack of strict administrative measures to dupe poor and gullible people of their hard-earned savings,” a Finance Ministry statement released by the Press Information Bureau on February 28 read.

The proposed Bill aims to provide a comprehensive legislation to tackle llicit deposit schemes by completly prohibiting such activities. Nine regulators including the RBI, SEBI, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and the State governments regulate financial activities. According to the Bill, all deposit-taking schemes are required to be registered with the relevant regulator, failing which the “Deposit Takers” will be considered “unregulated” and hence be banned.

According to the Bill, “Deposit Takers” include all possible entities (including individuals) receiving or soliciting deposits, except specific entities such as those incorporated by legislation. “Deposit” is defined in such a manner that deposit takers are restricted from camouflaging public deposits as receipts, and at the same time not to curb or hinder acceptance of money by an establishment in the ordinary course of its business.

The Bill creates 3 different types of offences -
1)running of Unregulated Deposit Schemes
2)fraudulent default in Regulated Deposit Schemes and
3)wrongful inducement in relation to Unregulated Deposit Schemes.

A ‘Competent Authority’ will be appointed which has the powers similar to a civil court, including powers to attach properties of the deposit takers. It also empowers police to search and seize any property believed to be connected with an offence under the Bill, with or without a warrant.
The Bill also approves creating designated courts to tackle such cases.

The Bill enables creation of an online central database, for collection and sharing of information on deposit taking activities in the country.

In a recent announcement, Reliance Jio has confirmed that the JioPhone users will be getting Facebook, YouTube and Google Maps integration beginning August 15. While the update misses out on WhatsApp integration for now, the company has promised to begin its roll out soon.
