A stunning collapse that saw New Zealand lose seven wickets for 55 runs
threatened to take the hosts out of the equation at the halfway stage.
However, a smart, unbeaten 73 from Ross Taylor allowed them to recover
and post a fairly competitive 273.
Set a target of 274, India's top order was dismantled early, leaving the middle and lower order with a lot of catching up to do
Shreyas Iyer led that bid with a busy 52, the lone noteworthy performance from the batting group.
Adding to his efforts were Ravindra Jadeja (55) and Navdeep Saini (45) who put on a 76-run stand for the eighth wicket to raise hopes of an unlikely win
