Cuba names Manuel Marrero Cruz as first prime minister since 1976 Saturday Dec 21,2019

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has appointed the country's first prime minister in more than 40 years - the tourism minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz.

Marrero's appointment was ratified unanimously by deputies in the National Assembly on Saturday Dec 21,2019

The post of prime minister was scrapped in 1976 by the then revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

It was reinstated under the rules of a new constitution for the communist-run island passed earlier this year.

However, critics say any such changes are purely cosmetic as the Cuban Communist Party and the military remain the only two real decision-making institutions on the island.

Note

Fidel Castro led a communist revolution that toppled the Cuban government in 1959, after which he declared himself prime minister.

He held the title until 1976, when it was abolished and he became head of the Communist Party and president of the council of state and the council of ministers.

With his health failing, Castro handed power to his brother, Raúl, in 2006. He died in 2016.

Raúl Castro stood down from the presidency in 2018 but remains leader of Cuba's Communist Party and a major force in its politics.

8 West African countries, former French Colonies agree to discontinue CFA Franc and to have new Currency linked to the Euro

Eight West African countries - ( Ivory Coast, Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo ) have agreed to cut some of their financial links with France in a move which will see the end of a currency known as the CFA franc

Under the deal a new currency called the Eco is to be launched. It will still to be linked to the Euro.
The decision was announced on Saturday Dec 21,2019 during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the region.

For many people living in West Africa using the CFA franc in shops or markets has been a daily reminder of the lingering colonial link with France.

In a few months’ time these countries plan to have a new currency. Although it will still be pegged to the Euro, the African countries using it will no longer be forced to keep half of their reserves in the French treasury in Paris.

The BJP contested 79 of 81 seats in the Jharkhand assembly, supported an Independent candidate in one constituency and did not put up nominee against AJSU Party president Sudesh Mahto

Chief Minister Raghubar Das was dealt a severe blow in the Jharkhand assembly elections in which he failed to retain even his own seat, Jamshedpur East, which he lost to Independent candidate Saryu Roy, who is a BJP rebel and former minister.

Jharkhand is home to four major tribal groups - Santhal, Munda, Ho and Oraon. While the BJP is traditionally known to control the Munda votes, the JMM has a following among the Santhali vote while the Congress is believed to have the backing of the Ho and Oraon

All of Raghubar Das's predecessors, including Jharkhand's first chief minister Babulal Marandi, have been from the tribal community. The BJP tried to change the pro-tribal script in 2014 when it picked a non-tribal, Raghubar Das, from the backward Teli caste, to head the state

Raghubar Das, the first chief minister to complete a full term in office, proved anything but a deft politician. His attempts to change the tribal tenancy laws in 2017, which sought to dilute the protection the scheduled tribe had over their land, created a huge trust deficit for BJP in Jharkhand. The Congress-JMM led opposition along with the Church opposed the proposed amendments. The Das government had brought two bills in 2017 to change the two tenancy acts-the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNTA) and the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act (SPTA)--to allow commercial use of tribal land. The move was largely seen as a pro-corporate and anti-tribal. Sensing the anger of the tribal community, the BJP had put the decision on hold before the Lok Sabha polls, but the opposition succeeded in conveying the message that Das would push the bills through if voted back to power

28 assembly seats are reserved for STs and 9 assembly seats are reserved for SCs out of the total 81 assembly seats

In 2014, when the BJP bagged its highest tally of 37 assembly seats in Jharkhand, it was largely possible because a significant section of the tribal community voted for the saffron party. It was manifested in the BJP's performance in the 28 ST seats, where it was almost on par with the JMM, often seen as the first claimant of tribal votes in Jharkhand (the BJP had bagged 11 seats whereas the JMM tally was 13). However in 2019, the JMM-Congress combine has now won 25 of these 28 seats and the BJP which contested all the seats could manage to win just 2 seats

However,BJP improved its performance in seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes. Of the 9 SC assembly seats in Jharkhand, the BJP bagged 6, one more than its 2014 tally of 5 seats

The last three-phases of voting were held in Jharkhand amid nationwide protests against the NRC and the CAA. On December 12, 16 and 20, polls took place for 43 seats out of the total 81 seats in the state. The result tally shows that the BJP won 17 seats followed by the JMM (11) and Congress (9), while the AJSU, a former election ally of the BJP, got two seats in the last three phases.
In 2014, the BJP had won 15 seats. In 2019, as per available data of the Election Commission, the BJP was able to retain only 10 seats. However, Congress and the JMM have gained two and six extra seats over their previous wins in the last assembly election.

This was the first state election since the creation of Jharkhand in 2000 that the BJP contested the polls alone. It junked its oldest ally in the state, the All Jharkhand Students Union Party, whose Sudesh Mahto tried till the very last moment to have a pre-poll tie-up with the BJP.

The BJP leadership, then smarting under the Maharashtra experience of having been "ditched" by 35-year-old ally Shiv Sena, decided to go solo in Jharkhand. The party, however, did not put up its candidate against Sudesh Mahto at Silli seat in Ranchi.

The trend from the counting of votes in Jharkhand shows that the BJP would have been in advantageous position had it conceded to demands by the AJSUP in the assembly election

2019 Croatian Presidential Elections Sunday Dec 22,2019

The 2019 Croatian Presidential Elections were held in Croatia on Sunday Dec 22, 2019

As no candidate received a majority of all votes cast (including blank and invalid ballots), a second round will take place on Jan 05, 2020 between the two candidates with the highest number of votes in the first round

In the first round of the presidential election, former Social Democratic Prime Minister Zoran Milanović secured 29.55% of the vote, ahead of conservative incumbent President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, who received 26.65% of the vote.

The conservative folk musician and former Member of Parliament Miroslav Škoro, who was running as an independent candidate, narrowly failed to reach the run-off election, managing to attract the support of 24.45% of voters.

Therefore, this election marked the first time in Croatian history that the incumbent president did not receive the highest number of votes in the first round.

Also, Grabar-Kitarović attained both the lowest number of votes (507,626) and the lowest percentage of votes of any Croatian president competing in either of the two rounds of elections.

Furthermore, Milanović attained both the lowest number of votes (562,779) and the lowest percentage of the vote of any winning candidate in the first round of a presidential election.

Meanwhile, Škoro received the highest number of votes (465,703) for a third-placed candidate since Mate Granić (HDZ) in the 2000 presidential election and the highest-ever percentage of the vote for a candidate who did not advance to a run-off election.

2019 Afghanistan Presidential Election Results Sunday Dec 22,2019

Afghan officials announced Sunday Dec 22,2019 that President Ashraf Ghani had won reelection by a hair's breadth in a nationwide Sep 28,2019 vote, netting 50.64 percent of the preliminary tally — the majority he needed to avoid a second round of voting

Abdullah Abdullah, Ghani's estranged governing partner and main contender, denounced the preliminary results as "fraudulent" and vowed to challenge them.

The announcement Sunday came after weeks of delay, controversy and protests by opponents

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) said the total turnout in the presidential election was more than 1.8 million with Ghani securing 50.64% – enough to win in the first round of voting – beating his main challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, who shares power with Ghani in a unity government.

According to the tally released by the IEC on Sunday, the total turnout was 1,824,401 with Ghani winning 923,868 votes. Abdullah finished second with 39.5% and 720,099 votes.

Abdullah’s office said in a statement that he did not accept the preliminary results published on Sunday and that the commission had failed to tackle election fraud

Citizenship Amendment Bill(CAB) 2019 - Govt issues 8-point 'myth-buster' on CAB

1) Myth: CAB will provide citizenship to Bengali Hindus

Fact: CAB does not automatically confer Indian citizenship to Bengali Hindus. It is just an enabling legislation for persons belonging to six minority communities of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It has been proposed on extremely humanitarian grounds as these minorities had fled from these three countries due to persecution on grounds of their religion.

2) Myth: CAB dilutes 'Assam Accord'

Fact: CAB does not dilute the sanctity of the Assam Accord as far as the cut-off date of March 24, 1971, stipulated for detection/deportation of illegal immigrants is concerned.

3) Myth: CAB is against the interest of indigenous people of Assam.

Fact: CAB is not Assam-centric. It is applicable to the whole country. Citizenship Amendment Bill is definitely not against National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is being updated to protect indigenous communities from illegal immigrants.

4) Myth: CAB will lead to domination of Bengali speaking people.

Fact: Most of the Hindu Bengali population is settled in Barak Valley of Assam, where Bengali is declared the second State language. In Brahmaputra Valley, Hindu Bengalis are settled in isolated pockets and have adapted themselves to Assamese language.

5) Myth: Bengali Hindus will become burden for Assam.

Fact: CAB is applicable to the whole country. Persons facing religious persecution are not settled only in Assam. They are staying in other parts of the country as well.

6) Myth: CAB will trigger fresh migration of Hindus from Bangladesh.

Fact: Most of the minorities have already migrated from Bangladesh. Moreover, the scale of atrocities on them in Bangladesh has been coming down in recent years. In the changed scenario, large-scale migration on account of religious persecution is now a remote possibility. Further, there is a cut-off date of December 31, 2014 and benefits under Citizenship Amendment Bill will not be available for members of the religious minorities who migrate to India after the cut-off date.

7) Myth: CAB is a ploy to grab tribal land by accommodating Hindu Bengalis.

Fact: Hindu Bengalis are mostly settled in Barak Valley, away from tribal belts and blocks. Further, Citizenship Amendment Bill does not contradict laws and regulations for protection of tribal lands. Citizenship Amendment Bill is not applicable in areas where provisions of ILP and sixth schedule of the Constitution apply.

8) Myth: CAB is discriminatory against Muslims.

Fact: Any foreigner of any religion from any country can apply for Indian citizenship if he/she is eligible to do so as per the existing provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Citizenship Amendment Bill does not change these provisions at all. It only enables migrants of six minority communities from three countries to apply for Indian citizenship if they meet the given criteria.
