Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Dr J Jayalalithaa had breathed her last on this very day last year.
And today Tuesday Dec 05,2017 on her first death anniversary, we would like to remind you how before Jayalalithaa became a force to be reckoned with in the world of politics, she remained the unchallenged queen of Tamil cinema for nearly 30 years.
While she dominated the south Indian film industry, she was also the highest-paid female actor in India between 1965 and 1980
Jayalalithaa has acted in more than 120 films in several languages, including, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
She first debuted as a leading lady when she was still at school with the 1964 blockbuster Kannada film Chinnada Gombe. The film, directed by BR Panthulu, gave her a solid launch pad for her acting career. The film was remade in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. The success of the film instantly made her one of the most sought after female actors in south India. She even acted in an English film titled, Epistle, which came out in 1961
Although she tried to make a mark in other languages, Jayalalithaa had acted majorly in Tamil films. She debuted in Kollywood with 1965 film Vennira Aadai.
Despite its shortcomings, Jayalalithaa's 1973 film Suryagandhi was way ahead of its time. The film talked about empowering women at a time when women were expected to live on the terms set by their husband.
Jayalalithaa has starred in around 90 Tamil films. Of these films, in about 28 films she was paired opposite legendary actor MG Ramachandran aka MGR
Jayalalithaa and MGR became one of the most loved onscreen couples of Tamil cinema since the success of their first movie together, Ayirathil Oruvan (1965)
Jayalalithaa's films with legendary thespian Sivaji Ganesan were as popular as her films with MGR. Jayalalithaa and Sivaji Ganesan's film Deiva Magan was the first Tamil film to be submitted by India for the Academy Awards in Best Foreign Language Film category
