Seventy thousand Puerto Ricans were suddenly told to evacuate on Friday Sep 22,2017 as a dam over spilled after being overpowered by Hurricane Maria.
At 2.10pm on Friday, engineers from the National Weather Service warned that the dam at Lake Guajataca was failing, bringing more life threatening floods to the areas of Isabela and Quebradillas.
'At 210 PM, dam operators reported the Guajataca Dam is failing causing flash flooding downstream on the Rio Guajataca.
'All Areas surrounding the Guajataca River should evacuate NOW. Their lives are in DANGER!' a National Weather Service tweet read.
Maria has already wiped out thousands of homes on the island nation and has claimed at least 24 lives in total.
It continues to ravage the Caribbean as a Category 3 storm and is currently churning through Turks and Caicos. The dam in Puerto Rico is on the island's northwest tip
Hurricane Maria is currently the strongest storm to hit the US territory of Puerto Rico in over 80 years. It knocked out all power lines and caused record flooding throughout the island.
It could be up to six months before electricity is fully restored to Puerto Rico, and Governor Rossello called Maria 'the most devastating storm of the century.'
The governor said the storm was a 'major disaster' for the island.
