3 times more women widowed/divorced/separated than men in India

4.1% of India’s population is widowed or divorced/ separated. Among larger states, Kerala has the highest proportion of such people, Haryana the lowest.

 The Sample Registration System (SRS)-2014 data reveals a much higher proportion of women in this category.

Experts explain this could be because of women’s higher life-expectancy as well as social factors that make remarriage more difficult for women.
