2016 Zambia General Election Thursday Aug 11,2016



 The 2016 Zambia General Election is scheduled to be held on Thursday Aug 11,2016 to elect the President and the National Assembly and also a Constituional Referendum will be held alongside the elections, with proposals to amend the bill of rights and Article 79.



Zambians have started voting in presidential and parliamentary elections after a campaign marred by violence between rival groups.

Zambia has seen a wave of pre-election violence in recent weeks, with fighting erupting between opposition and government supporters. Police have also broken up opposition campaigning.

About 6.7 million people are registered to vote in the southern African country, where President Edgar Lungu's left-leaning PF faces a tough challenge from pro-business opposition leader Hichilema and his UPND


Note

In the 2011 General Election,Patriotic Front emerged victorious whose candidate Michael Sata was elected President, with the PF winning 61 of the 150 seats in the National Assembly

Following Sata's death in October 2014, early Presidenttial Elections were held to elect a successor to complete the remainder of his five-year term, and PF candidate Edgar Lungu was elected.
