West Indies won the toss and chose to field

A battling performance in the final session helped India recover from a poor start against West Indies and reach 234-5 at close of play on the first day of the third test on Tuesday Aug 09,2016

West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and put the tourists into bat, a choice that was quickly rewarded with two early wickets. Shikhar Dhawan (1) and captain Virat Kohli (3) both fell to leave India on 19-2.

Virat Kohli was dismissed by 19-year-old debutant seamer Alzarri Joseph with a short ball that nipped back into the India captain, who gloved it through to first slip. Joseph went on to make an impressive start to his test career, finishing the day with 2/38

Lokesh Rahul was able to make more of an impact, but was dismissed by spinner Roston Chase for 50 just before lunch as a struggling India finished the session on 87/3

India then made a similarly disappointing start to the afternoon session, losing Rohit Sharma, who fell for just nine runs to Joseph.

India had almost battled through an afternoon session in which it scored just 43 runs when Ajinkya Rahane's patient innings of 35 runs from 133 balls came to an end moments before tea.
Ajinkya Rahane was bowled by Chase, who also finished the day with figures of 2/38

Scorecard
India 234/5 in 90 Overs

Virat Kohli                   03(8 Balls)

Ajinkya Rahane             35(133 Balls 4x4)
Ravichandran Ashwin    75*
Wriddhiman Saha          46*

Beginning the evening session on 130-5, India looked to be in serious trouble.

However, all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha both held firm to frustrate their hosts.
India's scoring rate increased after the second new ball was taken, with Ashwin continuing his impressive form to reach 75 not out at stumps. Saha supported his teammate well and was unbeaten on 46 at the close.

Statistical highlights of Day 1 Tuesday Aug 09,2016

Wriddhiman Saha, for the first time, has posted three consecutive innings of 40-plus in Tests — all against West Indies — 40 at North Sound, 47 at Kingston and 46 not out at Gros Islet.

While posting an unbeaten 46 at Gros Islet, Saha faced 122 deliveries — the most balls faced by him in a Test innings, obliterating the 120 balls faced by him while scoring 60 vs Sri Lanka at Galle in 2015.

Saha took his series aggregate to 133 (ave.66.50) in three innings — his best in a Test series, bettering the 131 (ave.43.66) in four innings vs Sri Lanka in 2015.

Saha has been involved in three stands of 50-plus for the sixth wicket in this series in as many innings — the sequence being 108 (unbroken) with Ashwin in the present Test, 98 with Rahane at Kingston and 71 with Ashwin at North Sound.

Ajinkya Rahane has registered strike rate of 26.31 while posting 35 off 133 balls — his lowest when he has registered double-digit score in a Test innings.

Alzarri Joseph, at 19 years 263 days, became the second youngest West Indian bowler to open the bowling in Tests — the youngest being Jerome Taylor, who opened at 19 years 5 days, in the first innings against Sri Lanka at Sabina Park, Kingston in June 2003.

India’s total of 234 for five is the lowest on the first day of the Test match at Gros Islet. India, in the 2006 Test, had scored 361 for four on the first day of the Test.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s unbeaten 75 not out off 190 balls is his first fifty vs West Indies — his seventh in Tests.

In matches batting first, Ashwin has scored three consecutive fifties — his sequence being 56 vs South Africa at Delhi in December 2015; 113 at North Sound in July 2016 and 75 not out at Gros Islet in August — both vs West Indies.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s superb average of 66.57 is the highest amongst the Indian batsmen with at least five innings against the West Indies — his aggregate being 466 in nine innings, including three hundreds. The next best average is by Sunil Gavaskar — his tally being 2749 (ave.65.45) in 48 innings, including 13 hundreds.

With two five-wicket instances apart from two fifty-plus knocks, including a century, in this series, Ashwin has become the third Indian all-rounder to achieve the said distinction in a Test series. Kapil Dev had accomplished the feat twice in the six-Test series — vs Pakistan in 1979-80 and vs England in 1981-82. Bhuvneshwar Kumar had registered the double in the five-Test series vs England in England in 2014.

Virat Kohli, as number three batsman, is averaging 23.25, — his tally being 93 in five innings with a highest of 41 vs Australia at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi in 2012-13.

Virat  Kohli has batted at this batting position for the first time in an away Test.

Shikhar Dhawan (1), Kohli (3) and Rohit Sharma (9) have provided the second occasion of three out of the top five Indian batsmen getting out in single-digit scores vs West Indies since 2000.

Lokesh Rahul, for the first time, has recorded a hundred and a fifty in consecutive Test innings. In the Kingston Test, he had registered 158, followed by a fifty in the present Test

Day 2 Wednesday Aug 10,2016

On day two, Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman SAha completed their respective hundreds -- a fourth Test ton for Ashwin and a maiden Test century for Saha -- en route to their 213-run stand for the 6th wicket to take India to 353 runs in their first innings.

Afterwards, West Indies had reached 107/1 at close of play, with Kraigg Brathwaite unbeaten on 53 runs.
