One of Bollywood's most acclaimed playback singers, Mukesh Chand Mathur was born on July 22, 1923 in Delhi. His singing talent was discovered by a distant relative when Mukesh sand at his sister's wedding.
He first rose to fame with Raj Kapoor-starrer Andaz in 1949 in which he helmed songs like Hum aaj kahi dil ko kho baither and Tu kahe agar jeevan bhar.
It was his flair that earned him the nickname 'The Man With The Golden Voice'. Some of the other melodies sung by the singer include Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye or Awaara Hoon.
In 1974, Mukesh won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback singer for his song Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai from the film Rajnigandha. Following that he won big at the Filmfare Awards for four songs, most notably Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein, the title track of the film Kabhie Kabhie.
The Google doodle commemorates the birth anniversary of the singer today. It shows Mukesh on the right smiling and holding a microphone and with the beautiful graphic from the song Kabhie Kabhie Mere Dil Mein in the background.
Mukesh died of a heart attack on 27 August 1976 in Detroit, Michigan, US, where he had gone to perform in a concert.
