When Portugal and Wales face off for a spot in the final of the European Championship, two players will be expected to rise far above the rest.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, club teammates at Real Madrid and the most expensive players in the history of the sport, will bear the hopes of their nations on Wednesday night at Stade de Lyon.

None of the previous 48 matches played at Euro 2016 has pitted two players of such unequaled star status and undisputed importance to their teams.

Portugal has clawed its way into its fourth semifinal in the last five tournaments. Having squeezed into the last 16 after three draws at the group stage, it needed a victory in extra time against Croatia and then penalties to get past Poland.

Across its five matches - and more than eight hours of football - Portugal has been in the lead for a total of only 22 minutes at Euro 2016.

A big part of Portugal's problems has been Ronaldo's performances, which have been below his incredibly high standards.

Ronaldo's two goals against Hungary are his only two strikes in five matches at the tournament. While Bale leads all players with 13 shots on target, Ronaldo has the inglorious statistic of a competition-high 14 shots off the mark.

SF 1 Portugal Vs Wales - Match Facts

Head-to-head
  • The sides have only played three times before - and never in a competitive game.
  • Portugal have won two of the three encounters, with Wales' only win coming in 1951.
  • The only meeting in the last 65 years was a friendly in June 2000. Luis Figo scored the opening goal as Portugal won 3-0 in Chaves.
Portugal
  • Portugal have contested six semi-finals at World Cups or European Championships - but their only win came on home soil at Euro 2004, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in a 2-1 win against the Dutch.
  • This is the fifth time Portugal have reached the semi-finals of the European Championship.
  • Portugal's last six matches at European Championship finals have ended in draws after 90 minutes - all five at Euro 2016 and their semi-final against Spain at Euro 2012, which they lost on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
  • Portugal are unbeaten in their 12 competitive fixtures under Fernando Santos (W8, D4), with all eight of their wins coming by a single-goal margin. The shoot-out win against Poland is counted as a draw.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored two goals in 13 knock-out games at major tournaments. He is one shy of equalling Michel Platini's record of nine goals at the finals of the European Championship.
  • Nani has been involved in three of Portugal's six goals at Euro 2016 - two goals and one assist.
  • Portugal have won three of their four penalty shoot-outs at major tournaments. No team has ever won penalty shoot-outs in back-to-back matches at the European Championship.
Wales
  • The Welsh have scored 10 goals at Euro 2016. The only British team to score more at a major tournament is England, who netted 11 times at the 1966 World Cup.
  • Only France, with 11 goals, have a better attacking record than Wales at Euro 2016.
  • Wales are the first team to reach the semi-finals on their European Championship debut since Sweden in 1992 (Czech Republic, finalists in 1996, are recognised by Uefa as the successors to Czechoslovakia).
  • This is the first time Wales have reached the semi-final of any Uefa or Fifa tournament - at any level, for men or women.
  • Hal Robson-Kanu has scored two goals from three shots on target at Euro 2016. He has scored as many goals in his last four internationals as in his previous 30.
  • Aaron Ramsey, who misses this match through suspension, has scored or assisted five of the last eight goals scored by Wales (excludes own goals).
  • Gareth Bale has had 14 shots on target at Euro 2016 - more than any other player.

SF 1 Portugal beat Wales 2-0 and enter the final

Cristiano Ronaldo beat Gareth Bale in a battle between Real Madrid's superstar duo and registered more European Championship records as Portugal progressed to the Euro 2016 final win a 2-0 win over Wales.

Ronaldo's bullet header from Raphael Guerreiro's cross in the 50th minute blew open a cagey encounter and brought the three-time world player of the year level with Michel Platini's record of nine goals in European Championship finals.

On a record third appearance in the Euros semis, Ronaldo also had a telling part to play in Portugal's second as his low drive was turned home by Nani in the 53rd minute

More records, victory and a return to the final of the Euros after the heartbreak of losing on home soil to Greece 12 years ago, left Ronaldo vindicated after a tournament in which many had questioned whether his best days were behind him at 31

Ronaldo could have had more. A fiercely dipping free-kick flew inches over and he only failed to move level with France's Antoine Griezmann as the tournament's top scorer when he fired into the side-netting after rounding Wayne Hennessey as Wales were pulled apart on the counter-attack.

Following a strong defence from Wales during the first 45 minutes the teams found themselves at 0-0 at half-time – but after Cristiano Ronaldo's team scored twice in three minutes supporters began looking seriously worried
