The NDA Government on Wednesday June 01,2016 gave its nod for the construction of the nine kilometer Washermenpet-Wimco Nagar extension for phase-I of Chennai Metro Rail project, which will connect north Chennai with the rest of the city, at a cost of 3,770 crore.
Preliminary work to acquire lands along the route, which will have eight stations and a depot, are already underway. Eight stations will include two underground stations at Sir Theagaraya College and at Korukkupet. Tenders have already been floated for the construction of the two underground stations and 2.5km tunnels.
Of the total cost, the Centre's share will be 713crore and the state government 916crore, which will include cost of land and rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) of 203crore.
The rest of the amount of Rs 2,141crore will be through loan.
The project, which will cover a length of 9.051km, is planned to be completed by March 2018.
