Cartosat-2 series - India's new earth observation satellite

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)successfully launches 20 satellites Wednesday June 22,2016

The rocket, with 20 satellites totally weighing 1,288 kg, was launched into the orbit at 9.26 am.Wednesday June 22,2016

The rocket's main cargo is India's 725.5 kg Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation. This satellite is similar to the earlier Cartosat-2, 2A and 2B. The images sent by Cartosat satellite will be useful for cartographic, urban, rural, coastal land use, water distribution and other applications.

  • The Cartosat-2 series satellite is the primary satellite carried by PSLV-C34.
  • Built, launched and maintained by the ISRO, the satellite weighs around 725.5 kg.
  • PSLV-C34 launched Cartosat-2 series satellite at 09:26 hrs (IST), on June 22, 2016, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Cartosat-2 carries a state-of-the-art panchromatic (PAN) camera that can take black and white pictures of the earth in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • Some key features of the satellite - orbit type is Circular Polar Sun Synchronous, orbit height is 505 km, orbit inclination is 97.48 degrees
  • The images sent by Cartosat satellite will be useful for cartographic, urban, rural, coastal land use, water distribution and other applications.
  • The mission life of the Cartosat satellite is about 5 years.
