2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil - 106-year-old Aida Gemanque becomes oldest torchbearer in Olympic history

There are still days to go for the Rio Olympics, but a record has already been set. 106-year-old Aida Gemanque aka Grandma Iaia has become the oldest Olympic torchbearer when she carried the Olympic flame in the Amazonian city of Macapa.

Gemanque on Saturday June 18,2016 broke the record formerly held by Alexander Kaptarenko, who was 101 when he took part in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics relay

“I am overjoyed. I have to be grateful for this joy, which I never expected in my life. I am immensely proud,” she said just after lighting the celebration cauldron in Macapa, the capital of Amazonian state Amapa.

This is not the first record Gemanque has broken a record.

At the age of 103, she entered the Guinness Book of World Records by becoming the ‘oldest skydiver’. With that record, she also earned the nickname 'extreme granny.'

The 95-day torch relay will pass through 325 Brazilian cities and involve some 12,000 runners before ending at Rio's Maracana Stadium for the lighting of the Olympic cauldron on August 05,2016
