Amma calling: Jayalalithaa's message, routed through Noida call centre, reaches 2 crore people

When 10-year-old Laya picked up the telephone last week, she thought it was a regular call - either one of her friends or relatives had called.

What she didn't expect to hear was the voice of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on the phone. An excited Laya and her family listened to the personalised message the AIADMK general secretary has been sending to the people of Tamil Nadu to assure them that their 'Amma' would be with them in their hour of need.

This recorded communication comes after a two-minute WhatsApp audio clip she released on December 17, in which she made an emotive statement expressing anguish for the sufferings of flood-affected people.

In a span of two weeks, the directorate of information and public relations has managed to send the 12.38-minute speech to 2 crore people. The message has been relayed through a call centre in Noida to landlines and cellphones to individual households in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore - the worst affected areas in the recent deluge.

The speech begins with the traditional vanakkam and Jayalalithaa introducing herself as a beloved sister -"Vanakkam, ungal anbu sahodari Jayalalithaa pesukeran (your be loved sister Jayalalithaa speaking)."

She then talks about the 100-year record rainfall this northeast monsoon and how thousands have suffered losses. "Don't worry , you have given me the power and I am for you and I am with you and the government will bring you back to life and this is a promise," she says. She then highlights the measures taken by the government and also talks about the contributions of the Army, Navy and Air Force, NDRF , SDRF , police force, fire services and NGOs
