Heavy Rain in Mumbai; Trains Services Affected, Schools Shut Friday June 19,2015

 
Thousands of commuters were stranded across Mumbai today as most train services were suspended after heavy rain battered the city overnight.

The city received 60.34 mm rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs received 57.48 mm and 64.92 mm rainfall, respectively between 8 am to 8 pm on Thursday
In the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Friday, Mumbai has recorded a whopping 283 mm of rain, which pushes the total rainfall received so far in June to 537 mm. This is more than the monthly average of 523 mm.

 
All schools have been ordered to close by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city's civic agency, which has issued an alert, advising people against stepping out.

More showers have been forecast through the day with a high tide of 4.60 metres (nearly 15 feet)

With tracks completely waterlogged, operations have been suspended on the Harbour line. Train services have also been stopped between the busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and the Kurla suburb on the Central line. The Western Railways is running staggered services till Andheri.

Around 70-80 lakh people travel everyday by local trains, considered the lifeline of the city.

Pedestrians navigate through waterlogged roads and traffic jams, trying to reach their destinations

Massive traffic jams were reported across the city. The city's BEST buses have also altered their routes in view of flooding and heavy water-logging reported at several areas including Hindmata, Dadar, Parel, Sion, Vikhroli, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Santa Cruz.

 

As services on all three railway lines - Central, Western and Harbour - were cancelled, harried commuters rushed to catch buses, taxis or any other mode of transport available, resutling in severe traffic jams
Residents immediately took to Twitter to warn others.

The rains caused water-logging in almost all low-lying areas of Mumbai and its suburbs including Kurla, Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Andheri, Parel, Lower Parel, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Dombivili.
