A fast-track court in Delhi on Wednesday Feb 19,2014 sentenced to death the three men accused of brutally raping and murdering a 19-year-old city girl in February 2012
Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat noted that there could be nothing more "ghastly, brutal and grotesque" than the incident in question, and added that the perpetrators of crimes like rape and murder "forfeit their right to live".
Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat awarded the maximum punishment, the death penalty, to Rahul(26) and Ravi and Vinod, both 22.
The Incident
On February 9, 2012, the victim was on her way home from work with three other female colleagues. They were dropped off by a bus around 8.30pm and were walking home in Qutub Vihar Phase II in Najafgarh when the three convicts accosted them in a red Tata Indica car.
The men began passing lewd comments. When the victim rebuked them, they pulled her inside the car and sped away.
For the next three days they repeatedly gang-raped her in the fields of Rewari. They poured acid into her eyes, inserted a broken glass bottle into her private parts and mutilated her face before dumping her in a field to die.
The Haryana police found her body four days after her abduction.
