Kerala launches lottery to help poor girls' wedding Wednesday Jan 01,2014

The scheme, "Mangalya lotteries", was approved by the state cabinet on Wednesday Jan 01,2014.

The proceeds from sale of tickets of the draw would be utilised for giving Rs 30,000 for wedding of girls from BPL families and also for those from APL families with an annual income not exceeding Rs one lakh

The lottery is linked to the 'Mangalyanidhi' scheme proposed in the state budget in 2013, which mooted to mop up funds by imposing a cess on the wedding halls

The Social Welfare Department will be the nodal agency for implementing the scheme and district level committees chaired by Collectors to select beneficiaries
