Rajya Sabha Election February 07,2014

The Rajya Sabha has 250 members; 12 of them are nominated by the President and the rest are representatives of the states and union territories and are elected by members of the legislative assemblies for six year terms.

Unlike the Lok Sabha, the upper house is never dissolved. Elections are held to one-third of its seats every second year.


The date for Rajya Sabha polls have been confirmed by the Election Commission of India on Monday Jan 20,2014. 

The elections will be held for the seats falling vacant between April 2-14 ,2014

55 seats in 16 States of India -Maharastra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Assam,Bihar, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan and Meghalaya are lying vacant.

Besides Maharashtra(7 seats) the elections will be held in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh (six seats each), West Bengal and Bihar (five each), Odisha and Gujarat (four each), Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan (three each).
The other states to see polling are Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Jharkhand (two seats each) and Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Manipur (one seat each).

Announcing the Rajya Sabha poll schedule on Monday, the Election Commission said that notification would be issued on January 21. The last date for filing of nominations is January 28 while that for withdrawal is January 31. Polling would be held on February 7,2014


Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha Polls Feb 07,2014

The election for the 6-seats from the state in the upper house is slated next month as the terms of -

• N. Balaganga (AIADMK)
• T.K. Rangarajan (CPI-M)
• G.K. Vasan and Jayanthi Natarajan (both Congress)
• Vasanthi Stanley and A.A. Jinnah (both DMK) 

come to an end in April 2014

AIADMK has nominated on Thursday Jan 23,2014 -

• S. Muthukaruppan(Tirunelveli city district secretary)
• N. Chinnadurai(Tuticorin district council chairman and the joint secretary of the party's youth wing)
• Vigila Sathyanand (Tirunelveli Mayor)and 
• L. Sasikala Pushpa(Tuticorin Mayor)

as its four candidates for the Rajya Sabha seats. 

Andhra Pradesh Rajya Sabha Election -6 Seats
8 candidates, including two Congress rebels, filed their nominations for 6 RS seats from Andhra Pradesh.

T Subbrami Reddy, K V P Ramachandra Rao and M A Khan, all Congress, and Telugu Desam's Garikapati Mohan Rao and Sitarama Lakshmi were among the eight who entered the fray from the state.

Former MP K Keshava Rao, who defected from the Congress, filed his papers as Telangana Rashtra Samiti candidate.

Congress MLC K V Satyanarayana Raju alias Chaitanya Raju and MLA Adala Prabhakar Reddy were the other two candidaes who entered the fray as party rebels in the name of "United Andhra Pradesh."

Bihar Rajya Sabha Election -5 seats
The JD(U) candidates Ramnath Thakur, Kahkasha Parveen and Haribansh on Tuesday Jan 28,2014 filed nomination papers for Rajya Sabha polls from Bihar
With a candidate requiring 41 votes to sail through, all three JD(U) nominees are set to sail through in the Rajya Sabha polls as the ruling party has 118 MLAs, in addition to four Independents backing the state govt from outside
It is to be noted that the JD(U) had denied renomination to its three sitting Rajya Sabha MPs - NK Singh, Sabir Ali and Shivanand Tiwari 

Gujarat Rajya Sabha Election -4 Seats
BJP's Shambhuprasad Tundiya, Chunibhai Gohil and
Lalsinh Vadodiya and Cong's Madhusudhan Mistry, in charge of party's affairs in Uttar Pradesh
filed their papers from Gujarat.
 
Odisha Rajya Sabha Election -4 Seats
The Rajya Sabha Elections would be held to fill up the four Rajya Sabha seats in the state as the terms of Ramachandra Khuntia of Congress, Mangala Kissan and Renubala Pradhan from BJD and Balbir Punj of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will end on April 2,2014

In the current state assembly, the parties strength are -

• BJD has 107 members
• Congress 27
• BJP  6
• Communist Party of India (CPI) has one member and
• Independents 6

The BJD, which has the support of an independent legislator, can win three seats on its own strength.


Odisha's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday named three candidates for the February 7 Rajya Sabha elections in the state.

Panchayati Raj Minister Kalpataru Das, Textiles Minister Sarojini Hembram and former minister Ananga Udaya Singh Deo will be the party candidates for three of the four vacant seats

BJD has also decided that it will back eminent architect and sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra for the fourth seat, for which no party has the required numbers.

The Congress, meanwhile, said it will field Ranjib Biswal, a former member of the Lok Sabha from Jagatsinghpur, for the fourth seat to take on Mohapatra

Maharashtra Rajya Sabha Election - 7 Seats
The elections are being held for seven seats from Maharashtra and 287 elected members of the Legislative Assembly form the electoral college
The Congress party, on Sunday Jan 26,2014 renominated Murali Deora and Hussain Dalwai for third and second term respectively. The two filed their nominations in presence of Chief Minister Prithivraj Chavan and state Congress president Manikrao Thakre on Monday Jan 27,2014

Tuesday Jan 28,2014 is the last day for filing of nominations.
So far, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, eminent lawyer Majid Memon (both NCP), Rajkumar Dhoot (Shiv Sena) and Sanjay Kakade (Independent) have filed their nomination papers

With only seven candidates in the fray for as many Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra, all of them are set to get elected unopposed.The seven candidates are

• NCP president Sharad Pawar and general secretary Majid Memon,
• RPI (A) chief Ramdas Athavale
• Independent candidate Sanjay Kakade
• Congress’ sitting MPs Murli Deora and Hussain Dalwai and

BJP announce 7 Candidates Friday Jan 24,2014
Former Union Ministers CP Thakur, Satyanarayan Jatia and Vijay Goel are among seven BJP candidates announced by the party on Friday for the ensuing biennial Rajya Sabha elections
Delhi unit chief Vijay Goel has been nominated from Rajasthan, party vice president CP Thakur has been nominated from Bihar and Satyanarayan Jatiya from Madhya Pradesh.
The names were finalised after the meeting of the party's Central Election Committee chaired by BJP President Rajnath Singh and attended by chairman of BJP Parliamentary Party LK Advani, party's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and leaders of Opposition in both Houses Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley.
Among others nominated include -

AIADMK Leader J Jayalalithaa Replaces Candidate For Rajya Sabha Polls Saturday Jan 25,2014

J Jayalalithaa replaced N Chinnadurai with A K Selvaraj, who is the party's organising secretary.

In a statement, J Jayalalithaa announced the expulsion of Mr Chinnadurai for "indulging in anti-party activities and going against its principles bringing disrepute to the ruling AIADMK."
