Despite boycott by principal opposition party, Bangladesh goes to
polls on Sunday Jan 05,2014 amid violence
Since November 26,2013 the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance has enforced nationwide blockade for 22 days in phases, demanding the cancellation of the elections. It wanted the polls to be held under an independent caretaker government, a demand the ruling Awami League has declined.
The 10th parliamentary election is going to be held in just 147 out of 300 seats in 59 out of 64 districts of the country amid boycott by the main opposition BNP, and its allies.
Ahead of Bangladesh parliamentary elections scheduled for January 5, miscreants on Saturday burnt 38 polling centres in at least 28 districts.
The violence was reported from Rajshahi, Nilphamari, Narsingdi, Kishoreganj, Feni, Kurigram and Natore districts
On the eve of the general elections, two people were killed by the anti-govt activists who torched 38 polling stations.
The miscreants even set ablaze a train while enforcing a 48-hour nationwide strike aimed at disrupting the controversial polls.
Many schools, converted into polling centres were also burnt in districts including Jhenidah, Netrakona, Bogra, Brahmanbaria, Kushtia, Pirojpur and Barguna.
"No one at home and abroad will recognise it as elections and through this the Awami League government will appear anew as an illegal structure," BNP chief Khaleda Zia, who also heads the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance said
Calling the polls "farcial", BNP vice chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday urged people to boycott the election at any cost
The elections have been boycotted by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP) led by Begum Khaleda Zia.
A total of 390 candidates, mostly from the Awami League and its ally
Jatiya Party, are contesting from 147 seats where the number of voters
is nearly 44 million.
The Election
Commission has set up over 18,000 polling stations across the country.
Without the participation of the BNP and its allies, polling would be held in only 147 of 300 constituencies, Election Commission (EC) officials said. Candidates in the other constituencies would be declared elected unopposed
