World Media Summit(WMS)

The World Media Summit(WMS)is a media forum co-founded by the -

  • ITAR-TASS of Russia
  • Kyodo News of Japan
  • Turner Broadcasting System Inc
  • British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and
  • Google 
in 2009 in Beijing, where its first meeting was held

The WMS aims to build an efficient platform for the global media to communicate with one another and pool collective wisdom, discuss survival and development, and talk about cooperation and the media's future.

About 300 representatives from more than 170 media outlets from around the globe gathered in Beijing,China to discuss the seismic shifts and challenges in the industry at the World Media Summit (WMS)

The opening ceremony of the summit was held at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing, and Chinese President Hu Jintao delivered a keynote speech.

The World Media Summit, launched by Xinhua and eight other world media organizations, attracted leading wire services, radio and television broadcasters, newspapers and magazines, and on-line media from around the world.

During two days of discussions at the Moscow summit, hundreds of media representatives exchanged views on media development around the theme of "Global media: meeting challenges of the 21st century." Many media leaders acknowledged that the industry has undergone some profound reshuffle and transformation, and that traditional media are facing mounting pressure from new media and the Internet.
The Second World Media Summit (WMS), a grand gathering of global media organizations, concluded on July 6,2012 with organizers announcing the establishment of a working group to prepare for the next summit
