2013 Zimbabwean General Election Wednesday July 31,2013


The 2013  Zimbabwean General Election scheduled on Wednesday July 31,2013 will be the first elections held under a New Constitution which was approved in a Referendum in March 2013 and signed into law by President Robert Mugabe on May 22,2013


Zimbabwe has a population of some 13 million, according to the 2013 census.By July 23,2013 about 6.4 million voters had been registered, according to officials


On May 31,2013 the Zimbabwean Supreme Court Ruled that President Robert Mugabe should set a date as soon as possible, and that presidential and parliamentary elections must be held by July 31,2013

The Zimbabwean Supreme Court Ruling followed an application to the court by a Zimbabwean citizen, Jealousy Mawarire,demanding that the country's president set the date for elections before the expiry of the tenure of the seventh parliament, on June 29,2013

Some 600 foreign election observers - mainly from Africa - have been accredited to monitor the polls. They will join about 6,000 local observers.
Zimbabwe did not invite Western observer missions because of sanctions imposed on President Robert Mugabe and his top officials for rights abuses.

Zimbabwe is a Republic with a Semi-Presidential System of Govt. President Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union -Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) has been the dominant political party in Zimbabwe since independence on April 18,1980

 To be declared a winner, a presidential candidate must win more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate reaches this mark, a run-off will be held on Sep 11,2013


Robert Mugabe Re-elected as President of Zimbabwe Saturday Aug 3,2013
Robert Gabriel Mugabe was re-elected the President of Zimbabwe on Saturday Aug 3,2013 extending a 33- year reign at the helm of the country he helped liberate from white rule in 1980





The victory was as comprehensive as it was controversial with Robert Mugabe sweeping the polls with 61 % of votes cast, nearly twice as those polled by Morgan Tsvangirai, his closest rival, amidst opposition allegations of fraud


Robert Mugabe’s ZANU (PF) proved similarly dominant, winning two-thirds of the seats declared thus far.




Alliance in the 2013 Zimbabwean General Election

Although there were initial discussions about forming a grand coalition between the two MDC parties and other opposition parties, by July 9,2013 two separate coalitions had been formed, one comprising MDC-T  and ZANU-Ndonga and the other coalition comprising MDC -N and ZAPU.

2008 Zimbabwe Presidential Election
The election was held on March 29,2008.The three major candidates were-
Incumbent  President Robert Mugabe of the ZANU-PF
Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change(MDC)
Simba Makoni,an Independent

As no candidate received an outright majority in the first round, a second round was held on June 27,2008 between Tsvangirai (with 48% of the first round vote) and Mugabe (43%). Tsvangirai withdrew from the second round a week before it was scheduled to take place, citing violence against his party's supporters. The second round of elections went ahead with Mugabe as the only actively participating candidate, although Morgan Tsvangirai's name remained on the ballot
Robert Mugabe won the second round by an overwhelming margin and was sworn in for another term as President on June 29,2008



2008 Zimbabwean Parliamentary Election
The election was held on March 29,2008 to elect Members to both the House of Assembly and the Senate of the Zimbabwean Parliament
The ruling Zanu-PF lost its majority in the House of Assembly(got only 99 seats) for the first time since independence in 1980, as the two factions of the MDC won most of the seats(110 of 210 seats)MDC-T got 100 seats and MDC -M got 10 seats
A month after the election,the two factions merged 

In the Senate election -
Zanu-PF got 30 seats
MDC - T got 24 seats and
MDC -M got 6 seats
