QF 3 Germany Vs Italy - Match Facts
The Italians have 11 players a yellow card away from a suspension that would see them miss a potential SF- Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Daniele De Rossi, Mattia De Sciglio, Eder, Lorenzo Insigne, Graziano Pelle, Salvatore Sirigu and Simone Zaza.
For Germany, Boateng, Khedira, Mats Hummels, Joshua Kimmich and Mesut Ozil are a booking away from missing a possible SF
Joachim Loew's Germany face the acid test of their status as world champions against Italy on Saturday in the Euro 2016 QF's
The facts speak for themselves: Germany have never managed a win over the Azzurri in eight attempts on the big stage at either a World Cup or European Championship finals.
It's a record German fans would love to see broken.
They have suffered recent disappointment at Italian hands in the semi-finals of both the 2006 World Cup finals and Euro 2012.
And although Germany thumped Italy 4-1 three months ago in Munich -- the first time they had defeated the Azzurri in nearly 21 years -- Loew knows that will count for little this weekend.
Another failure to beat Italy when it matters will be hard to swallow for German fans now used to success.
The truth is Germany failed to sparkle in qualifying for France and have only rarely impressed in the two years since Brazil.
They suffered uncharacteristic away defeats to Poland and the Republic of Ireland in qualifiers.
While Germany hit the ground running in Brazil with a 4-0 rout of Portugal, they eased themselves into their Euro 2016 campaign.
A 2-0 win over Ukraine and goalless draw with eventual quarter-finalists Poland saw them squeeze 1-0 past Northern Ireland.
Germany have the enviable record of being the only team at Euro 2016 yet to concede a goa
Head-to-head
- Germany have never beaten Italy at a major tournament (D4, L4).
- They have lost all four of their games against Italy in the knockout stages of a tournament - three times at the World Cup (semi-finals in 1970 and 2006 plus the final in 1982) and once at the European Championship finals (the semi-finals in 2012).
- Germany and Italy's last encounter was earlier this year when Germany won 4-1 in Munich. It was their first victory over the Azzurri since June 1995.
- Fifteen of the 18 goals scored in their previous eight encounters at major tournaments have come after half-time, including seven in extra time (39%).
Germany
- Germany have reached at least the semi-finals in their last five major tournaments. They last time they failed to do so was at Euro 2004 (they were eliminated in the group stage).
- They have won 14 of their last 17 games at major tournaments, drawing two and losing one (a 2-1 defeat against Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2012).
- Germany are the only team yet to concede a single goal at Euro 2016. The only previous time they kept clean sheets in their first four games at a major tournament was in the 1978 World Cup.
- The last player to score past Manuel Neuer in a major tournament was Oscar in the 2014 World Cup semi-final against Brazil - a run of 480 minutes.
- Thomas Muller hasn't scored a goal in nine games at the Euros. He has 10 goals in 13 World Cup games.
- Mario Gomez has scored five goals at a Euros, the joint-most for Germany along with Jurgen Klinsmann.
- Gomez has scored 21 goals in his last 27 starts for Germany, including one in each of his four starts in 2016.
- Bastian Schweinsteiger could equal Miroslav Klose's record of featuring in 37 matches at a World Cup and European Championship finals.
Italy
- Italy have kept 19 clean sheets in 37 matches at a European Championship finals, more than any other team in the history of the tournament - just ahead of Germany (18 clean sheets in 47 games).
- They have already won three games at Euro 2016, their highest tally (excluding penalty shoot-outs) at the tournament since Euro 2000 (four wins).
- Italy's only previous game in Bordeaux in a major tournament was a 2-2 draw against Chile in the 1998 World Cup group stage.
- Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci are the only players to have started all four of Italy's games.
- Graziano Pelle's two goals at Euro 2016 have come in the 92nd and 91st minute.
Before the match, everyone inside the stadium observed a minute's silence to pay tribute to the Italian victims of an attack in Bangladesh
QF 3 Germany beat Italy 6-5 on penalties after 1-1 at regular time and extra time
Germany, the World Cup holders ended their long-standing hex against Italy, beating the Azzurri 6-5 on penalties after Saturday's game finished 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes and extra time.
Mesut Ozil's second-half opener for Germany in the 65th minute was cancelled out by a Leonardo Bonucci penalty in the 78th minute to force extra time before Jonas Hector emerged as the hero for Joachim Loew's side by scoring the 18th kick in a remarkable shoot-out.
Italy were given a golden opportunity to equalise after Boateng handled in the penalty area
Jonas Hector fired Germany into the semi-finals of Euro 2016 at Italy's expense after an epic round of 18 penalty kicks that saw players from both sides produce stunning misses in Bordeaux on
Saturday.
World Cup holders Germany won the shoot-out 6-5 after a tense match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time, and their reward is a semi-final with the winner of Sunday's last quarter-final between hosts France and Iceland.
After no goals were scored in extra time, Ozil, Thomas Mueller and Bastian Schweinsteiger all failed from the spot for Germany, usually so reliable from 12 yards.
But after Simone Zaza and Graziano Pelle missed for Italy and Bonucci was denied by Manuel Neuer, Matteo Darmian's failure to convert the Azzurri's ninth kick allowed Hector to become Germany's hero.
It was Germany's first win over Italy at a major tournament at the ninth attempt.
