Dakshayani, an 86 year old elephant who is set to enter Guinness Records as the world’s oldest living elephant, was honoured in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala.
The elephant belongs to the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) which controls a large number of temples in the state including the famed Sabarimala temple of Lord Ayyappa. Reports suggest that the TDB has applied to the Guiness Records stating claim to Dakshayani being the world’ oldest living elephant.
Elephants are an integral part of the cultural milieu of Kerala and are prominently displayed in festivals and processions. They are also conferred star status in the state with many of them even having fan clubs.
TDB president Prayar Gopalakrishnan told reporters that they have evidence that Dakshayini is the world’s oldest living elephant. The president added that the elephant was gifted to the TDB by the Travancore royal family
“As a first step to enter the Guinness, we are honouring her on Wednesday July 27,2016, and we will be working towards this. On the day a special postal cover of Dakshayani from the Kerala Circle Postal Service would be issued,” the TDB president told
The TDB is known to own 33 elephants in the state
