Thousands
from New York's Coney Island and surrounding areas to Florida and Canada
braved the cold and chilly waters as they participated in the New
Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge tradition.
The swarms of people gathered near frigid bodies of water before making running leaps into the oceans, rivers and lakes.
Women, men and children of all ages participate in the polar plunges which often raise money for charity.
With
teeth chattering, groups in New York took a ceremonial dip in the
Atlantic Ocean as part of the annual Polar Bear Plunge tradition on
