Sourav Ganguly, the Dada of Indian Cricket, Turns 44 Friday July 08,2016

It's difficult to think of a any Indian captain other than Sourav Ganguly (DOB July 08,1972)who would have the courage to take off his shirt to celebrate a win at the Lord's balcony.

Such was the fire and the desire to win with which Ganguly, who turned 44 on July 8, played his cricket.

A Dada in every sense of the word, Ganguly introduced Dadagiri to Indian cricket and taught his players the art of giving it back as hard as they get it.

The generation of Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan have all fought fire with fire since being thrown at the forefront of a fight by Ganguly.

It was Test wins away from home (11 in 28 matches) that made the 'Prince of Calcutta' – as famously christened by Geoffrey Boycott – India's most successful captain.

Sourav Ganguly was captain of the Indian team from 2000 to 2005

Sourav Ganguly achieved Test wins in Australia, England and West Indies

7213 runs in 113 Tests and 11363 runs in 311 ODIs speak volumes about Ganguly the batsman, who forged an enviable opening partnership in the ODIs with Sachin Tendulkar.

The first instance of Ganguly's brilliance came in the third Test at Leeds against England in 2002. Ganguly audaciously chose to bat on a green top in cloudy skies. Rahul Dravid and Sanjay Bangar withstood the hostile bowling and put India in a position of strength. Dravid contributed with a magnificent 148 and the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Ganguly carried on the good work. While Tendulkar smashed 193, Ganguly blasted 128 as India ended on 628/8 declared.

India's bowlers made England follow-on and in the end, they won the match by an innings and 46 runs to achieve their first win on English soil after 16 years. More success was soon to follow
