India’s javelin-thrower Neeraj Chopra created history on Saturday as he won a gold medal at the Under-20 IAAF World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with a world record throw.
The 18-year-old from Haryana’s Panipat district broke the old record of 84.69 m held by Latvia’s Zigismunds Sirmais by by throwing the javelin a distance of 86.48 m.

World Championships, Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel announced a cash
award of Rs 10 lakh.
Goel also tweeted “Congratulations Neeraj Chopra to become first Indian world champion in athletics. Kudos!! You have made India proud.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too joined in, congratulating the young javelin thrower. “Congratulations Neeraj Chopra for the outstanding sporting accomplishment. We are proud of you,” Modi tweeted.
