2013 Yercaud By-Election Polling Wednesday Dec 04,2013



Electronic Voting Machines(EVM's) were dispatched on Tuesday to 290 booths at 119 polling stations where 2,40,290 voters will cast their votes in Wednesday’s by-election to the Yercaud Assembly Constituency, which is reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Tribes.

Polling will begin at 8 a.m. in the polling stations spread across four taluks – entire Yercaud and Vazhapadi and a part of Salem and Attur taluks — and end at 5 p.m. 

Yercaud has 41 booths, Vazhapadi 179, Salem 58 and Attur 12.

There are a total of 11 candidates in the fray with AIADMK’s P Saroja, wife of AIADMK legislator C Perumal, whose death necessitated the bypoll and DMK’s V Maran being the main contestants


Polling for the byelection to Yercaud (ST) Constituency began amid tight security at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and the first two hours recorded 18 % polling

AIADMK candidate P. Saroja, wife of the deceased MLA, garlanded her husband’s memorial and offered prayers before proceeding to cast her vote at the Panchayat Union Middle School in Papanayakanpatti, Attur Taluk.


Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate V. Maran – the only other candidate from a registered and recognised political party to contest in the byelection– cast his vote at the Panchayat Union Elementary School at his native Poovanur village


The by-election to the Yercaud Assembly constituency on Wednesday recorded the highest ever turnout of close to 90 % in the constituency that has a little over than 2.4 lakh voters

Note
The byelection is being held as the seat fell vacant due to the demise of AIADMK MLA C. Perumal on July 19,2013
