As many as 2,583 candidates battled it out in 230 Assembly constituencies, for which the polling took place on November 25, 2013
In the last Assembly, the BJP had 143 members and the Congress 71. The voting percentage this time was 70% of the total electorate of 46,457,724

The BJP has won 164 seats;Congress 59 seats;BSP 4 seats and Independents 3 seatsTwo independents who contested for the BJP this time — former Congress Minister Manvendra Singh and Minister Vijay Shah’s brother Sanjay Shah Makdai — have won from Maharajpur and Timarni respectively.
Congress did not win a single seat in 17 districts - Morena, Datia, Umaria, Narsinghpur, Betul, Hoshangabad, Raisen, Agar, Shajapur, Dewas, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Ujjain, Neemuch and Ratlam
Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan, who won in Budhni and Vidisha with margins of around 85,000 and 17,000 votes respectively,is all set to occupy the CM’s chair for the third time. He attributed the victory to the trust and love of the electorate.
Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan said, “We will leave no stone unturned in developing the State further. It is a victory if our ideology and organisation... There has been a lot of discrimination against MP by the Centre and we would have gone much further had they not discriminated against us. The country and the people don’t want this Central government. MP will try to contribute the maximum seats to the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections next year.”
Congress general secretary and in charge of Madhya Pradesh Mohan Prakash said that the results would be reviewed and the reasons for defeat would be ascertained. “We got the support of the people but could not translate it into votes. We will call our candidates and representatives of the State, district and block committees and discuss the reasons for this failure,” he said.
The BJP’s victory in Madhya Pradesh was marred by the defeat of seven ministers — Ramkrishna Kusmariya, Brijendra Pratap Singh, Harishchandra Khartik, Anup Mishra, Laxmikant Sharma, Ajay Vishnoi and Karan Singh Verma
The biggest upset of this election was the defeat of Congress stalwart and its former State chief Suresh Pachouri. He lost to Surendra Patwa, the son of former Chief Minister Sunderlal Patwa, by more than 20,000 votes in the Bhojpur suburb of Bhopal
